Synopsis
The Verdanturf Contest is about to begin, and May is nervous about entering Skitty for the first time. Ash worries that Timmy will miss registration, but he arrives just in time; his mother has been piling homework on him, and his father, Tommy, helped him sneak out. When Mrs. Grimm finds his room empty, Tommy calmly tells her that their son has gone to compete. In the Appeals Round, Jessie, disguised as “Jesslana”, scores 28.5 with a Dustox routine combining Poison Sting, Whirlwind and Psybeam. May’s Skitty fumbles its Blizzard, but May recovers by having it juggle with Double Slap, earning 24.9. Timmy, as the masked Phantom, scores 27.8 with Dusclops’s combination of Will-O-Wisp and Psychic. May, the Phantom, Jesslana and a Coordinator named Stefano reach the battle rounds.
Mrs. Grimm storms in, furious that her husband let Timmy enter, but Tommy defends their son’s passion and reminds her of her own childhood love of Pokémon. In the second round May knocks out Stefano’s Wartortle within seconds, while the Phantom faces Jesslana as his parents watch. Dusclops’s Psychic stops Dustox’s Psybeam, and the explosion blows away Jessie’s disguise. Team Rocket try to snatch Dusclops, but Pikachu’s Thunderbolt blasts them off and also knocks off Timmy’s mask, revealing him to his mother, who apologises and walks away. Backstage, Tommy tells Timmy that his mother once adored her Poochyena until her parents took her Pokémon away and forbade her to have any, and that she feared the same heartbreak for him. He urges Timmy to make the most of his chance in the final.
The final pits Skitty against Dusclops. Skitty bats away a Focus Punch with Double Slap, but Dusclops keeps up the pressure with Will-O-Wisp, Psychic and repeated Hyper Beams, and Skitty’s Blizzard fails again. May turns to Assist: Gust blocks a Hyper Beam and evens the score, String Shot stops a Focus Punch and Ember counters Will-O-Wisp, though Psychic halts Silver Wind. With Mrs. Grimm now cheering her son from the sidelines, Dusclops fires another Hyper Beam, and May trusts Skitty with one more Blizzard. This time it works, knocking Dusclops out and winning the Contest. Drew, watching from the stands, is quietly impressed. Mrs. Grimm agrees that Timmy may keep entering Contests as long as he keeps up with his homework, and May receives the Verdanturf Ribbon, her second.
