The Pokémon Trading Card Game first appeared in Japan in October 1996, created by Creatures Inc. and originally published by Media Factory. It reached North America in 1999, when Wizards of the Coast released the now-legendary Base Set and turned a video-game spin-off into a worldwide phenomenon. More than 85 billion cards have since been printed in 16 languages and sold across 90-plus countries, making it one of the most successful trading card games ever made.

Cards are released in sets — individual expansions such as Jungle, Team Rocket, or Ascended Heroes — and those sets are grouped into series, each era running roughly alongside a generation of the main video games. Wizards of the Coast handled the earliest expansions before The Pokémon Company took over English publishing with the EX Series in the early 2000s, and every era since has introduced its own signature cards: Pokémon-ex and Pokémon-GX, the V, VMAX and VSTAR mechanics, and now the long-awaited return of Mega Evolution.
