Astral Radiance Origin Forme Dialga booster pack

Pokémon TCG: Sword & Shield—Astral Radiance is the tenth main expansion of the Sword & Shield era, released in English on 27 May 2022. Its 216-card set is fronted by the twin box legends Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR and Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR, and it introduces a brand-new special mechanic to the game: the shimmering Radiant Pokémon.

Astral Radiance is the deepest tie-in to Pokémon Legends: Arceus in the whole run — almost the entire set is themed around the ancient Hisui region, from the Origin Forme legendaries to a wave of Hisuian regional forms and the Hisui-era Trainers. It was built by merging two simultaneous Japanese sets, Time Gazer (s10P) and Space Juggler (s10D), both released on 8 April 2022. VSTAR (from Brilliant Stars) and the Trainer Gallery both continue here.

The English set totals 216 cards — 189 in the regular numbering plus 27 secret rares (190–216) — and a separate 30-card Trainer Gallery (TG01–TG30) brings the full expansion to 246 cards.

Travel back to a primitive land dominated by myth and legend, where Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR and Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR shape the very fabric of time and space! Discover the ancient Hisui region, encounter dazzling new Radiant Pokémon, and battle alongside a host of Hisuian Pokémon and a brand-new Trainer Gallery in the Sword & Shield—Astral Radiance expansion!

Set Highlights: Time, Space & the Hisui Region

Astral Radiance is anchored by the two Origin Forme legendaries of Hisui — Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR (40/189) and Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR (114/189) — but for collectors, the runaway star is the Machamp V alternate art (172/189), a stunning illustration that became the set’s single most valuable card. Around them sit the three Hisui starter VSTARs and a whole new special rarity in the Radiant Pokémon.

The Radiant Pokémon: A Shining Debut

Astral Radiance introduced Radiant Pokémon — Shiny (alternate-colored) Basic Pokémon printed with a distinctive shimmering “Radiant” holofoil. They come with one crucial deckbuilding rule: you may include only ONE Radiant Pokémon in your entire deck, a hard singleton restriction that echoes the old Prism Star ✵ cards and revives the spirit of the Neo-era “Shining” Pokémon. Crucially, Radiant Pokémon are not Rule Box cards, so ability-lock effects like Path to the Peak leave their Abilities untouched.

Three debuted here. Radiant Greninja (46) became one of the most-played cards of the entire era — its “Concealed Cards” Ability (discard an Energy to draw 2) slotted into almost any deck as a free, splashable draw engine. Radiant Heatran (27) and Radiant Hawlucha (81) rounded out the trio.

Origin Formes & the Hisui Region

The heart of Astral Radiance is Hisui. Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR pairs the “Star Portal” VSTAR Power (attach up to 3 Water Energy from your discard pile) with “Subspace Swell,” an attack that scales with the number of Benched Pokémon — it became one of the defining decks of 2022. Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR answers with “Metal Blast” (more damage for each Metal Energy) and the dramatic “Star Chronos” VSTAR Power, which lets you take another turn.

They are joined by the three Hisui starters as VSTAR lines — Hisuian Decidueye, Hisuian Typhlosion and Hisuian Samurott — plus Hisuian Lilligant VSTAR, Hisuian Sneasler, Hisuian Braviary, Kleavor, Ursaluna, Basculegion and more, and the Hisui-region Trainers Adaman, Irida, Cyllene and Kamado. Irida in particular became a key search Supporter for the format’s Water decks.

Astral Radiance carries the second Trainer Gallery, following its introduction in Brilliant Stars — 30 character-art cards numbered TG01–TG30. The marquee pulls are the Calyrex alternate arts: Ice Rider Calyrex V/VMAX (TG14/TG15) and Shadow Rider Calyrex V/VMAX (TG17/TG18), each with a rainbow secret at TG29/TG30. The subset also revives fan-favourite character art with the Galarian legendary birds, Zacian and Zamazenta, a Cynthia-and-Garchomp card (TG23), and full-art Gym Leader cards.

Those Gym Leaders — Allister (TG24), Bea (TG25), Melony (TG26), Milo (TG27) and Piers (TG28) — are among the most collected trainer cards of the era.

Astral Radiance shipped with the full Sword & Shield retail line-up. Booster packs held 10 cards each (plus a Pokémon TCG Live code card) and came in five wrappers — Origin Forme Dialga, Origin Forme Palkia, Hisuian Decidueye, Hisuian Typhlosion and Hisuian Samurott. A booster box held 36 packs. Unusually, the set had two Elite Trainer Boxes — an Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR ETB and an Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR ETB (identical contents, different artwork) — each with 8 packs, 65 sleeves, 45 Energy, dice, a VSTAR marker and accessories. A Pokémon Center–exclusive Darkrai ETB, Build & Battle boxes and a Build & Battle Stadium completed the range.

English version vs. Japanese Variations

Astral Radiance is a textbook example of English localisation merging two Japanese sets into one. The “time” half came from Time Gazer (s10P) — built around Origin Forme Dialga — and the “space” half from Space Juggler (s10D), built around Origin Forme Palkia. Both launched in Japan on 8 April 2022, and their combined contents (plus extra secret rares and the Trainer Gallery) became the single 246-card English set.

As always, Japanese boosters hold 5 cards per pack rather than 10, and the two Japanese sets were sold as separate products — so collectors chasing the same art can buy either the Time Gazer or the Space Juggler side.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Astral Radiance is regarded as a collector-friendly set with lots of beautiful art, and its chase ceiling is set by the alternate-art V cards rather than the gold secrets. Approximate near-mint raw values are a guide only and move constantly.

Machamp V — 172/189 (Alternate Art)

Machamp V — 172/189 (Alternate Art)

The set’s #1 chase and a genuine modern classic — a dynamic, low-hype-Pokémon illustration that collectors fell in love with. Regularly $100–200 raw, with gem-mint PSA 10 copies selling well beyond. Proof that great artwork, not just a popular Pokémon, drives value.

Origin Forme Palkia V — 167/189 (Alternate Art)

Origin Forme Palkia V — 167/189 (Alternate Art)

A gorgeous “floating geometry” illustration of the space legendary, and the second-biggest chase in the set. Typically $45–95 raw depending on condition and demand.

Garchomp V — TG23 (Cynthia, Trainer Gallery)

Garchomp V — TG23 (Cynthia, Trainer Gallery)

The beloved Cynthia-and-Garchomp character-art card from the Trainer Gallery — a favourite of Sinnoh fans and one of the most popular TG pulls, generally around $35–50. (The main-set Garchomp V alt art at 178/189 is also a strong chase.)

Beedrill V — 161/189 (Alternate Art)

Beedrill V — 161/189 (Alternate Art)

A striking, moody alternate art of an unlikely subject — the kind of “sleeper” alt art collectors love. Roughly $30–80 raw.

Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX — TG29 (Rainbow Secret)

Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX — TG29 (Rainbow Secret)

The rainbow “secret” version of the Calyrex VMAX from the Trainer Gallery, capping the subset alongside Shadow Rider (TG30). Among the pricier TG pulls, roughly $25–60 depending on the day.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Astral Radiance reshaped the competitive format — both through a new top-tier attacker and through one of the most warping Stadium cards ever printed.

Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR — 40/189

Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR — 40/189

The defining threat of mid-to-late 2022. Its VSTAR Power “Star Portal” dumps up to three Water Energy from the discard onto your board in a single turn, feeding “Subspace Swell” (60 damage + 20 for every Benched Pokémon). Paired with the Inteleon “drop-in” engine and Irida for consistency, “Palkia / Inteleon” became one of the two pillars of the pre-Worlds 2022 metagame.

Radiant Greninja — 46/189

Radiant Greninja — 46/189

Perhaps the most-played card of the era. Its “Concealed Cards” Ability — discard an Energy from hand to draw 2 cards — is free, colorless card advantage that slotted into nearly every deck. Because you can run only one Radiant Pokémon, “the Radiant slot” was Greninja by default for much of the format.

Path to the Peak — 213/189 (Stadium)

Path to the Peak — 213/189 (Stadium)

Arguably the most format-warping Stadium of the whole Sword & Shield era (reprinted here as a gold secret). While in play, Pokémon with a Rule Box — every V, VMAX and VSTAR — lose their Abilities, crippling ability-reliant decks. Crucially it leaves single-Prize attackers and Radiant Pokémon untouched, making it the backbone of the era’s control and single-prize strategies.

Trivia

  • Astral Radiance introduced Radiant Pokémon — the first brand-new special rarity since VSTAR, reviving the Neo-era “Shining Pokémon” idea with a Prism-Star-style one-per-deck rule.
  • It is the deepest Pokémon Legends: Arceus tie-in of the entire era — nearly the whole set is themed around the ancient Hisui region, arriving about four months after the game.
  • The English set was built by merging two Japanese sets, Time Gazer (s10P) and Space Juggler (s10D), into one 246-card behemoth.
  • Because two Japanese sets were compressed into one English numbering, a few cards appear in English only as secret rares — most notably Kleavor VSTAR, which has no regular in-set printing and exists only as gold/rainbow #196.
  • It carried the second Trainer Gallery, cementing the subset as a recurring, chase-heavy feature — the Gym Leader character cards and the Calyrex/Cynthia alt arts were especially popular.
  • Path to the Peak (reprinted here) is remembered as one of the most impactful Stadiums ever, defining a whole style of single-Prize deckbuilding.
  • Radiant Pokémon are not Rule Box cards, so ability-lock effects like Path to the Peak don’t shut them off — a subtle but important interaction.
  • Community pull-rate studies put Radiant Rares at roughly one every two boxes; because they’re relatively common, Astral Radiance is generally seen as a great-value, collector-friendly set with a modest chase ceiling headlined by Machamp V.
