Overview

Pokémon TCG: XY—Phantom Forces launched on November 5, 2014 as the fourth expansion of the XY era, built primarily from Japan’s ファントムゲート (Phantom Gate) set, which had released on September 13, 2014. The English release gathers 119 cards in the main numbering plus three Secret Rares — 122 cards in total — and pushes Generation VI’s darker side to the front, with the Shadow Pokémon Gengar and its Mega Evolution looming over the entire expansion.
Phantom Forces is remembered as one of the most competitively influential sets of its decade. It debuted the Spirit Link Pokémon Tools, unleashed a wave of format-defining Trainer cards — Battle Compressor, VS Seeker and the soon-to-be-banned Lysandre’s Trump Card — and introduced Team Flare’s disruptive Hyper Gear. Two theme decks, Burning Winds (Fire/Grass) and Bolt Twister (Lightning/Water), rounded out the launch line-up.
Spirit Link: Mega Evolution Unleashed
Phantom Forces introduced the Spirit Link mechanic, a new breed of Pokémon Tool that solved Mega Evolution’s single biggest weakness. Normally, Mega Evolving a Pokémon ends your turn — a brutal tempo cost that let opponents respond before your Mega could attack. When the matching Spirit Link is attached, its Mega Evolution Pokémon-EX can evolve without ending your turn, so it can Mega Evolve and attack on the same turn.
Mega Gengar: Face of the Set
Mega Gengar is the star of Phantom Forces, and the whole expansion is themed around the shadows it casts.
Team Flare Hyper Gear
The set also debuted Team Flare Hyper Gear — the first Pokémon Tools designed to be attached to your opponent’s Pokémon rather than your own, opening an entirely new axis of disruption.
Head Ringer (#97) makes the Pokémon-EX it’s clamped onto cost one extra Colorless Energy to attack, taxing the opponent’s biggest threats, while Jamming Net (#98) turns the opponent’s own Pokémon into a liability by punishing it with extra damage. These tools created a control-and-disruption space that later Team Flare sets would expand on.
The Trainer Engine That Redefined the Format
Beyond Mega Evolution, Phantom Forces quietly rewired competitive Pokémon. Several of its Trainer cards became staples that defined the game for the rest of the XY era and beyond.
Other Pokémon-EX & Mega Evolutions
Phantom Forces is stacked with Pokémon-EX beyond Gengar:
Products & Print Versions
Phantom Forces rolled out across the full Pokémon TCG product range. Booster packs shipped with four different artworks — Gengar, Aegislash, Manectric and Diancie — while two theme decks, Burning Winds and Bolt Twister, gave newcomers a ready-to-play on-ramp. A Gengar-themed Elite Trainer Box, blister packs, collector’s albums and portfolios completed the line-up.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
Phantom Forces is a collector-friendly set, headlined by a genuinely iconic Secret Rare and a beloved Gengar Full Art. Values below reflect near-mint singles and shift with the market.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Few sets have shaped the competitive game like Phantom Forces. Its Trainers and Mega attacker defined deck-building for years — several remain Expanded staples to this day.
Trivia & Points of Interest
- The modern game’s first ban. Lysandre’s Trump Card (#99) was the first card banned from the modern Standard format. Shuffling all discarded cards back into decks removed deck-out as a win condition and enabled unbreakable lock and stall strategies, so it was pulled from sanctioned play in 2015.
- Spirit Link’s debut. Phantom Forces introduced the Spirit Link Pokémon Tools, which let Mega Evolution Pokémon evolve without ending the turn — instantly becoming mandatory tech in every Mega deck that followed.
- A name that nods to Japan. M Gengar-EX’s attack is called Phantom Gate, a direct reference to the Japanese set’s name, ファントムゲート (Phantom Gate).
- Hyper Gear firsts. The set debuted Team Flare Hyper Gear — Head Ringer and Jamming Net — the first Pokémon Tools attached to an opponent’s Pokémon.
- The white Dialga. Dialga-EX’s Secret Rare (#122) is famous for its near-white, frosted artwork and remains the set’s most valuable card.
- Bigger in the West. The English set’s 119-card main run is larger than the Japanese Phantom Gate release, as English XY expansions bundled cards drawn from multiple Japanese products.
