Overview

Pokémon TCG: XY—Primal Clash launched on February 4, 2015 as the fifth XY expansion and one of the largest of the era — 160 cards in the main set plus four Secret Rares (164 in total). Tied to Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, it brought the Hoenn legends Groudon and Kyogre to the front in their colossal Primal forms. The English release was built from two Japanese sets at once: ガイアボルケーノ (Gaia Volcano) and タイダルストーム (Tidal Storm), both released December 13, 2014.
Primal Clash is remembered for introducing Primal Reversion, debuting the eye-catching Ancient Trait mechanic, and unleashing two of the most notorious combo Supporters ever printed — Archie’s Ace in the Hole and Maxie’s Hidden Ball Trick. Two theme decks, Earth’s Pulse (Fighting/Lightning) and Ocean’s Core (Water/Fire), anchored the launch alongside a pair of Primal-themed Elite Trainer Boxes.
Primal Reversion: Ancient Power Returns
Primal Clash’s headline mechanic is Primal Reversion — the TCG’s take on Groudon and Kyogre’s ancient transformations. Like Mega Evolution, a Primal Pokémon evolves from its basic Pokémon-EX and (without help) evolving ends your turn, but the payoff is enormous: 240-HP monsters with game-warping attacks and their own Ancient Traits.
Ancient Traits
Primal Clash debuted Ancient Traits — permanent, printed abilities marked with Greek-letter symbols and set against distinctive three-quarter-length artwork. Unlike Abilities, they can’t be shut off. Ω Barrier shrugs off opposing Trainer effects, α Growth doubles Energy attachment, Δ Evolution lets a Pokémon evolve the turn it comes into play, and θ Stop ignores the effects of opposing Abilities. The mechanic gave dozens of otherwise ordinary Pokémon a sharp competitive edge and became a defining flavour of the ORAS-era sets.
Archie’s & Maxie’s: The Combo Supporters
No cards define Primal Clash’s competitive legacy more than its two “ball” Supporters. Each can be played only when it is the very last card in your hand — and each drops a fully-evolved Stage 2 Pokémon straight from your discard pile onto your Bench, skipping the entire evolution line.
Mega Evolutions & Other Pokémon-EX
Beyond the Primals, Primal Clash is stacked with Pokémon-EX and two Mega Evolutions:
Stadiums & Tools
Primal Clash also delivered format-shaping Trainer tech:
Products & Print Versions
Primal Clash shipped across the full product line. Booster packs came in four artworks — Groudon, Kyogre, Gardevoir and Aggron — and two theme decks, Earth’s Pulse and Ocean’s Core, offered ready-to-play starts. Two collector-favourite Elite Trainer Boxes — Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre — headlined the range, alongside blisters, tins and portfolios.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
Primal Clash is a collector-rich set led by its Full Art Primals. Values below reflect near-mint singles and move with the market.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Primal Clash reshaped competitive Pokémon on two fronts — degenerate turn-one combos and enormous Primal attackers.
Trivia & Points of Interest
- Attacks named after the sets. Primal Groudon-EX’s attack is Gaia Volcano and Primal Kyogre-EX’s is Tidal Storm — the exact English names of the two Japanese sets, ガイアボルケーノ and タイダルストーム, that were merged to build Primal Clash.
- Two sets in one. Unusually, the English Primal Clash was assembled from two simultaneous Japanese releases rather than one, which is why it’s so large (160 main cards).
- Ancient Traits debut. The set introduced the Ancient Trait mechanic — printed, always-on effects with Greek-letter symbols and distinctive three-quarter artwork.
- Primal, not Mega. Groudon and Kyogre undergo Primal Reversion rather than Mega Evolution, but mechanically they behave like Megas — right down to needing a Spirit Link to evolve without ending the turn.
- Combo infamy. Archie’s Ace in the Hole and Maxie’s Hidden Ball Trick let Stage 2 Pokémon leap straight from the discard onto the Bench, spawning some of the fastest combo decks the game had ever seen.
- Two Elite Trainer Boxes. Primal Clash shipped with a pair of ETBs — one themed to Primal Groudon, one to Primal Kyogre.
Japanese Sets, Videos & Gallery
In Japan, Primal Clash’s cards came from two sets released the same day (December 13, 2014): ガイアボルケーノ (Gaia Volcano) and タイダルストーム (Tidal Storm).
