Burning Shadows booster box

Some sets are remembered for a deck. Some are remembered for a card. Burning Shadows, the third Sun & Moon expansion from August 2017, managed both — and it’s the card that most people picture first. Yes, it’s the one with the Charizard.

Leaning into a darkness-versus-light theme built around the Prism Pokémon Necrozma, Burning Shadows swapped the tropical sunshine of Guardians Rising for a moodier palette and a run of big, splashy Stage 2 GX cards — the kind that let you evolve a classic starter into a 230-HP monster. Charizard-GX, Gardevoir-GX, Machamp-GX and Salazzle-GX all headline.

It’s one of those rare sets that delivered on both fronts at once. Collectors got a genuine grail in the Charizard-GX Rainbow Rare; competitive players got Gardevoir-GX, one of the format’s best decks, and Guzma, a Supporter so good it rewired how the game was played for years.

The result was a hugely popular set on release that has only grown in stature since — opened, chased and cracked open on camera more than almost any other Sun & Moon release, almost entirely on the strength of one orange dragon.

Fiery Battles and Deep Shadows! What strange fires lurk in the shadows? Minions of Team Skull and a cavalcade of new Pokémon stand ready to battle in the dark of night and in the blazing sun! Slug it out with new titans like Necrozma-GX, Marshadow-GX, and Tapu Fini-GX, or battle with trusty allies from Machamp-GX and Charizard-GX to Darkrai-GX and Ho-Oh-GX. Fight for what’s right with the Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon—Burning Shadows expansion!

— Official Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon—Burning Shadows expansion description

Set Highlights: Charizard Steals the Show

Charizard’s first GX. Burning Shadows handed the franchise’s most famous Pokémon its debut Pokémon-GX (Charizard-GX, 20/147), and the secret Rainbow “Hyper” Rare version (150/147) instantly became one of the most chased — and most brutally rare — pulls of the entire era. It shared the spotlight with two big TCG debuts: Necrozma-GX (63/147), the Prism Pokémon who would headline the coming Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon storyline, and the Mythical Marshadow-GX (80/147).

Beyond Alola. After a Base Set that stuck almost entirely to Generation VII, Burning Shadows threw the doors back open. Charizard, Ho-Oh-GX (21/147) and Darkrai-GX (88/147) brought fan-favourite legends and starters from older regions back as GX — a mix that made this feel like a proper “greatest hits” pull list rather than an Alola-only affair.

The competitive engine room. This set was a deck-builder’s goldmine. Gardevoir-GX (93/147) anchored one of 2017–18’s defining decks, scaling its damage with every Energy on the board. Golisopod-GX (17/147) teamed with Garbodor in the aggressive “GolisoGarb” build. And then there was Guzma (115/147) — a Supporter that gusted up your opponent’s Bench and switched your own, so useful it became a near-automatic four-of in almost every deck for years. Its Full Art (143/147) was a genuinely pricey chase for what is, on paper, just a Trainer card.

On the shelf. The launch window was thick with GX-focused product — a Necrozma Elite Trainer Box, plus premium collections and tins built around Charizard, Ho-Oh and Necrozma. For most players, though, one card defined the set — and the hunt for that Rainbow Charizard is exactly why Burning Shadows is still fondly (and expensively) remembered.

Boosters held the usual ten cards, and the English set shipped with four wrapper artworks — Ho-Oh, Necrozma, Tapu Fini and Marshadow. Sealed product topped out at a 36-pack booster box, with a Necrozma Elite Trainer Box as the collector option and two theme decks for newcomers: Rock Steady (Fighting/Psychic, headed by Lycanroc) and Luminous Frost (Water/Fire, headed by Alolan Ninetales).

As with every modern set there’s no “1st Edition” print — that only ever existed for the vintage WotC sets, so treat any “1st edition Burning Shadows” listing as a red flag. Long out of print, its sealed product has appreciated sharply on the secondary market, and you can thank Charizard for most of that.

The English Burning Shadows is, like its siblings, a merged set. Japan got there first on 16 June 2017 with two 50-card “dual” sets — To Have Seen the Battle Rainbow (SM3H) and Darkness that Consumes Light (SM3N) — plus the “Facing a New Trial” subset.

Combined and re-numbered for the West, that became 147 cards (169 with secret rares) versus roughly 128 across the Japanese releases. The English set is larger and numbered independently of the Japanese originals.

Set List

The 169-card checklist runs 1–147 for the main set (the Full Art Supporters sit at 142–147), then 148–169 for the secret rares — the Rainbow Rares and gold Trainer/Energy cards. Trainer and Energy cards carry no Energy type.

The set’s window brought the tin-exclusive Ho-Oh-GX (SM57) and Necrozma-GX (SM58) from the Mysterious Powers tins, alongside blister and prerelease SM Black Star Promos — Jangmo-o (SM40), Komala (SM41), Cosmog (SM42), Alolan Meowth (SM43), Seviper (SM46), Crabominable (SM47), Zygarde (SM48) and Bewear (SM49). These are “SMxx” cards, not part of the /147 set.

Theme-deck cards. The two theme decks, Rock Steady (Fighting/Psychic) and Luminous Frost (Water/Fire), were built largely from reprints rather than new cards.

Japanese-only cards. As a superset of the two Japanese sets plus the “Facing a New Trial” subset, the English release doesn’t map one-to-one onto the Japanese numbering, and some Japanese prints reached the West only later.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

This is a short list with one very tall entry. Values move constantly, so check live sold and graded comps — and when you do, be specific about which Charizard you mean, because there are three.

Charizard-GX — Rainbow Rare (150/147)

Charizard-GX — Rainbow Rare (150/147)

The crown jewel, and one of the most iconic chase cards of the entire Sun & Moon era. Demand runs on the eternal Charizard premium rather than playability, and clean high-grade copies command a serious premium over the Full Art (135/147) and standard (20/147) versions. If you remember one card from this set, it’s this one.

Gardevoir-GX — Rainbow Rare (159/147)

Gardevoir-GX — Rainbow Rare (159/147)

The set’s other big chase, and unusual in that it’s wanted for both reasons — a beloved Pokémon and the best competitive card in the set. That dual demand keeps it near the top of want-lists.

The mid-tier chases

Behind the two headliners sit a strong bench: Ho-Oh-GX, Golisopod-GX, Marshadow-GX (156/147 rainbow), Darkrai-GX and Machamp-GX rainbows, plus the Guzma Full Art (143/147) as the trainer everyone wanted. Condition is everything on the rainbow and full-art cards — the textured foil scratches and whitens easily, so clean high grades are scarce.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Gardevoir-GX (93/147) — the set’s engine

Gardevoir-GX (93/147) — the set’s engine

Widely rated the best card in the set and the anchor of a top-tier, tournament-winning deck through 2017–18. Its Secret Spring Ability attached a Fairy Energy from hand to any Pokémon once per turn — and stacked with a manual attach, that’s two Energy a turn. Infinite Force then dealt 30× the total Energy on both Active Pokémon, snowballing into one-shot range, while the Twilight-GX attack shuffled ten cards from the discard back into the deck for long-game staying power. Built with Diantha to recycle its Energy, it was a consistent, high-ceiling monster.

Guzma (115/147) — the card that rewired the format

Guzma (115/147) — the card that rewired the format

Arguably the most important card in the set long-term. Guzma gusts one of the opponent’s Benched Pokémon into the Active spot and switches your own Active to the Bench — two effects, one Supporter. That combination made it a near-universal, almost-every-deck staple for years, superseding Lysandre and defining how attackers were picked off and repositioned across the whole era.

Golisopod-GX (17/147)

Golisopod-GX (17/147)

First Impression hit for a huge 120 damage on the turn after Golisopod-GX entered the Active spot — for a single Energy. Marry that to Guzma’s free switch and you had a devastating hit-and-run loop that powered the Golisopod / Zoroark-GX decks of the era.

Rounding out the competitive picture: Ho-Oh-GX gave Fire decks a Bench-loading GX attack, and the Choice Band and Rescue Stretcher reprints were quiet glue cards that stuck around for seasons.

Trivia & Pop Culture

The Charizard effect. It’s hard to separate Burning Shadows’ legacy from one card. The Charizard-GX Rainbow Rare became a modern grail, and the set’s enduring popularity — and the steady climb of its sealed product — rides almost entirely on that orange dragon. It’s one of the most-opened Sun & Moon sets for exactly that reason.

A set that scored twice. Plenty of sets please collectors or players; Burning Shadows did both. Charizard for the binder, Gardevoir-GX and Guzma for the deck box — a genuinely rare double.

Naming footnote. Fans have long enjoyed that Charizard-GX’s big attack is called “Crimson Storm” and its GX attack “Raging Out” — the Crimson landing here, one set before the actual Crimson Invasion. A small thing, but the kind of detail set nerds love.

Where Guardians Rising made the era click competitively, Burning Shadows made it a phenomenon at the pack-opening table.
