Crimson Invasion booster box

Not every set is a blockbuster, and Crimson Invasion — the fourth Sun & Moon expansion, out in November 2017 — is the era’s classic “mini” set: smaller, cheaper, and sandwiched between two heavy hitters in Burning Shadows and Ultra Prism. On paper it’s a modest release. In practice it handed the competitive scene one of its defining decks.

The hook is right there in the name: this is the Ultra Beasts’ invasion of the TCG. The extradimensional creatures from the Sun & Moon games — Buzzwole, Nihilego, Guzzlord and Kartana — arrive as Pokémon-GX for the first time, and Wizards… sorry, The Pokémon Company gave them their own striking red-and-black “UB” card frame to mark them out as alien invaders. It’s a genuinely cool bit of art direction.

Only four Ultra Beast-GX actually landed in the set; three more (Pheromosa, Celesteela and Xurkitree) were locked behind separate Ultra Beast GX Premium Collection boxes, so completionists had to shop around. Alongside them sit Gyarados-GX, Silvally-GX and the Aether-arc trainers Gladion and Lusamine.

Reception was muted for a set you open — thin on pull variety — but its stock among players is high, almost entirely thanks to one buff, mosquito-shaped monster. More on Buzzwole below.

Crimson Chaos Across Alola! The mysterious Ultra Beasts have arrived, invading the Alola region as crimson-tinged Pokémon-GX: Nihilego-GX, Buzzwole-GX, Kartana-GX, and the ravenous Guzzlord-GX! Can Silvally-GX and the other allies of Alola defend the islands—or will the Ultra Beasts take control? Find out when you battle for the prize with the Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon—Crimson Invasion expansion!

Set Highlights: The Ultra Beasts Invade

A new kind of Pokémon. Crimson Invasion is the set that brought the Ultra Beasts crashing into the TCG. These interdimensional invaders even carried their own printed “Ultra Beast” label on the card art — Nihilego-GX (49/111), Buzzwole-GX (57/111), Guzzlord-GX (63/111) and Kartana-GX (70/111) led the charge. It landed just two weeks before Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon reached the 3DS, so the whole expansion played like a trading-card trailer for the games’ Ultra Beast storyline.

Buzzwole breaks the format. One Ultra Beast towered over the rest in competitive play. Buzzwole-GX’s Jet Punch cost a single Fighting Energy for 30 damage — plus another 30 to one of your opponent’s Benched Pokémon — which meant it could pile on pressure as early as turn one, before most decks had even set up. Buzzwole/Lycanroc-GX and Garbodor/Buzzwole became tier-one staples of the 2017–18 season, and plenty of players felt the little bodybuilder was flat-out pushed.

Collector spotlight: the Ultra Beasts-GX Premium Collections. The most memorable products of this window weren’t boosters at all — they were the two Ultra Beasts-GX Premium Collections. One paired Pheromosa-GX with Celesteela-GX; the other, released a little later, paired Buzzwole-GX with Xurkitree-GX. Each box carried two foil Ultra Beast-GX promos, an oversized jumbo card, a playmat and a stack of boosters — a lavish way to own Ultra Beast-GX cards that never appeared in the 111-card set itself. For a lot of collectors, these two boxes are Crimson Invasion.

Crimson Invasion Elite Trainer Box

Boosters held ten cards, with four wrapper artworks fronted by the set’s Ultra Beasts — Buzzwole, Silvally, Kartana and Guzzlord. The 36-pack booster box came with a nice sweetener for the era: a guaranteed secret-rare-or-better card somewhere in the box. There was a Crimson Invasion Elite Trainer Box, two theme decks (Destruction Fang and Clanging Thunder), and — unusually — two separate Ultra Beast GX Premium Collections that carried the promo Beasts not found in packs.

As a smaller “mini” set it’s generally reckoned to have had a tighter print run than its neighbours, which keeps sealed product a little scarcer. And as with every modern set, there’s no “1st Edition” — that ended in the vintage era.

Variations between the Japanese and English releases

Like the rest of the Sun & Moon run, the English Crimson Invasion wasn’t a straight port of a single Japanese pack. It was merged from Japan’s two paired September 2017 half-sets — Awakened Heroes (覚醒の友者, SM4S) and Ultradimensional Beasts (超次元の暴牼, SM4A), each a roughly 50-card set. The two Japanese halves even carried type restrictions — Awakened Heroes had no Darkness or Fairy Pokémon, and Ultradimensional Beasts had no Fire or Metal — a split the English release dropped when it folded both into a single 111-card set.

Counting its 13 secret rares (112/111–124/111), the English set reaches 124 cards. The main event survived the trip intact: the Ultra Beasts arrived as Pokémon-GX in both regions, with Nihilego-GX, Buzzwole-GX, Guzzlord-GX and Kartana-GX wearing the distinctive red “Ultra Beast” GX styling, joined by Silvally-GX. No individual region-exclusive cards or artwork swaps are documented for the set.

Set List

The 124-card checklist runs 1–111 for the main set (Full Art GX and Supporters are woven into the top of that range), then 112–124 for the secret rares — the eight Rainbow Rare GX and five gold Trainer/Energy cards. Trainer and Energy cards carry no Energy type.

Other Cards

The Ultra Beasts & their red frame

The four in-set Ultra Beast-GX — Buzzwole (57), Nihilego (49), Guzzlord (63) and Kartana (70) — wear a bespoke red-and-black GX border that instantly reads as “not from around here.” It’s one of the set’s most memorable design touches and a fun sub-collection in its own right.

Gladion & Lusamine (Full Art Supporters)

Gladion & Lusamine (Full Art Supporters)

The Aether Foundation storyline shows up in the trainer line-up. Gladion’s Full Art (109) is the chase — a genuinely useful Supporter (see below) with a popular character behind it — while Lusamine’s Full Art rounds out the pair. A reverse-holo Gladion was also handed out at Regional Championships.

The gold secrets (120–124)

The gold tier is unusually deck-relevant here: Counter Catcher, Counter Energy and Wishful Baton are all comeback-flavoured cards keyed to being behind on Prizes — fitting for a set built around scrappy underdog Beasts — plus gold Warp Energy and a gold Water Energy.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

The premium layer here is the Rainbow Rare GX tier. Values shift constantly, so treat this as a pecking order and check live sold and graded comps for the exact card.

Gyarados-GX — Rainbow Rare (112/111)

Gyarados-GX — Rainbow Rare (112/111)

Usually cited as the set’s most sought-after card. It rides the eternal Gyarados fan-favourite premium plus the rainbow-rare treatment — a case where collector demand outstrips competitive relevance.

Buzzwole-GX — Rainbow Rare (115/111)

Buzzwole-GX — Rainbow Rare (115/111)

The rare card that’s wanted for both reasons: a beloved rainbow finish and the face of one of the era’s best decks. That dual pull keeps it firmly on want-lists.

Silvally-GX & the rainbow tier (119/111)

Silvally-GX & the rainbow tier (119/111)

Silvally-GX’s rainbow is a striking card, and together with the Nihilego, Guzzlord, Kartana, Alolan Golem and Alolan Exeggutor rainbows it forms the set’s full premium chase. Condition matters hugely on these — the textured foil whitens easily, so clean grades are scarce.

Behind the rainbows, the Gladion Full Art (109) is the trainer collectors and players both wanted.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Buzzwole-GX (57/111) — the reason this set matters

Buzzwole-GX (57/111) — the reason this set matters

A small set’s giant. Buzzwole-GX packed a whole gameplan into one card: Jet Punch spread 30 to a Benched Pokémon for a single Fighting Energy (cheap early pressure and sniping), Knuckle Impact hit for a huge 160, and the Absorption-GX attack dealt 40 damage for each of your remaining Prizes — up to a monstrous 240 on turn one or two. Loaded with Fighting support like Strong Energy, Diancie ◆ and Choice Band, it hit absurd numbers off almost no investment. It anchored two of the season’s best decks: “Buzzroc” (Buzzwole / Lycanroc-GX), using Lycanroc’s gust to line up knockouts, and Buzzwole / Garbodor, pairing raw damage with Ability lock.

Silvally-GX (90/111)

Silvally-GX (90/111)

The ultimate toolbox. Its typing bent to whichever memory disc you attached, it retreated for free, and it slotted into countless decks as flexible glue — the kind of card good players quietly relied on.

Gladion 95/111

Gladion (95/111) — the comeback button

One of the set’s most-played Supporters: Gladion let you look at your face-down Prize cards and take one into your hand. Prized your last Buzzwole, or a key Energy or Trainer? Gladion dug it out — a consistency and comeback tool that showed up far beyond just Fighting decks.

Rounding things out, Guzzlord-GX gave stall/mill decks a huge-HP Darkness wall, and Gyarados-GX and Kartana-GX turned up in rogue builds.

Trivia & Pop Culture

Small set, big footprint. Contemporary reviews were lukewarm on Crimson Invasion as a product to rip — one memorably shrugged “Ultra Beasts, I guess” — yet it’s remembered fondly by players because Buzzwole-GX went on to define a chunk of the 2017–18 season. It’s a lovely example of a set punching above its weight.

The invasion, staged. Splitting the Ultra Beasts across the main set and two Premium Collection boxes meant anyone chasing “all of them” had to buy several different products — a merchandising move fans noticed and grumbled about at the time.

A storyline in cardboard. The set leans into the games’ Aether Foundation arc, right down to Full Art Supporters for Gladion and Lusamine, tying the Beast invasion back to the plot of Sun & Moon. The next set, Ultra Prism, would pivot to a very different corner of the lore.
