Paldean Fates booster pack

Scarlet & Violet—Paldean Fates is a special expansion released on 26 January 2024, and it brings Shiny Pokémon flooding back to the Pokémon TCG for the first time in years. It is the English counterpart to Japan’s high-class Shiny Treasure ex, distilled from a huge 360-card Japanese set into a 245-card release built almost entirely around a “Shiny Vault” of alternate-colour Pokémon.

The 91-card main set is joined by 154 secret rares, the overwhelming majority of them Shiny Pokémon — from a Shiny Pikachu leading the charge to Shiny Tera Pokémon ex like Charizard ex and Gardevoir ex. Rather than pushing a brand-new mechanic, Paldean Fates is a collector’s set through and through: a treasure hunt of glittering reprints and dazzling new shiny illustrations.

The spotlight glistens on Shiny Pokémon making their fated return to the Pokémon TCG! Shiny Pikachu blazes the path forward as Tinkaton, Ceruledge, Dondozo, and more than 100 other Shiny Pokémon follow.

Set Highlights: The Shinies Return

Paldean Fates revives one of the TCG’s most-loved traditions: a set stuffed with Shiny Pokémon. Following in the footsteps of Hidden Fates and Shining Fates, it pairs an ordinary 91-card main set with an enormous run of shiny secret rares, topped by Shiny Tera Pokémon ex and full-art Supporters that became instant chase cards.

The headline pulls are the Shiny Tera Pokémon ex — Charizard, Gardevoir, Mew and the Ruinous and box legendaries among them — alongside three Illustration Rares and eight Special Illustration Rares showcasing shiny Pokémon and trainers.

As a special set, Paldean Fates arrived without a standard booster box. Its booster packs came in four collectible wrappers — Pikachu, Ceruledge, Tinkaton and Dondozo — and were sold through Booster Bundles, an Elite Trainer Box, tins and a range of premium collections rather than sealed boxes.

English version vs. Japanese Variations

Paldean Fates is the English release of Japan’s high-class set Shiny Treasure ex (sv4a), which launched on 1 December 2023. The Japanese set is far larger — a sprawling 360-card collection — and the English 245-card version trims it down while keeping the huge Shiny Vault at its heart.

Because both draw from the same print run, the shiny illustrations are shared across regions; the main differences are the overall set size, the card numbering and the language printed on each card.

Gardevoir ex — 29/91 (Double Rare)

Gardevoir ex — 29/91 (Double Rare)

The engine of the premier Psychic deck. Gardevoir ex streams Psychic energy from the discard pile to fuel a whole board of attackers, keeping it a perennial top-table choice.

Squawkabilly ex — 75/91 (Double Rare)

Squawkabilly ex — 75/91 (Double Rare)

A near-universal turn-one opener. Squawkabilly ex’s Squawk & Seize digs deep to set up almost any deck, which is why it saw play across the entire metagame.

Trivia

  • Paldean Fates continues the TCG’s “…Fates” shiny-set tradition, following Hidden Fates (2019) and Shining Fates (2021) — each a special set built around a vault of Shiny Pokémon.
  • Shiny Pokémon had been largely absent from the TCG for years, so Paldean Fates marked their long-awaited return — with more than 100 shinies packed into a single set.
  • The set is the English cut of Japan’s Shiny Treasure ex, which ran to 360 cards; the 245-card English release leaves a large chunk of the Japanese set behind.
  • Its 91-card main set is unusually small — the real bulk of Paldean Fates is the 154 secret rares numbered 92–245, nearly all of them Shiny Pokémon.
  • Because it was a special set, Paldean Fates never had a standard 36-pack booster box; the only way to buy packs was through Booster Bundles, tins, an Elite Trainer Box and premium collections.
  • The Shiny Charizard ex (234) and Shiny Iono (237) became two of the most valuable Scarlet & Violet chase cards, with Iono among the priciest Supporter cards of the era.
  • Despite being collector-focused, it quietly reprinted format staples like Charizard ex, Gardevoir ex and Squawkabilly ex, making it surprisingly useful for competitive players too.
