Paradox Rift Roaring Moon ex booster pack

Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet—Paradox Rift is the fourth main expansion of the Scarlet & Violet era, released in English on 3 November 2023. Set in the anomalous depths of Area Zero, it introduced the era’s Paradox Pokémon — prehistoric Ancient forms and robotic Future forms — as two brand-new card types with mechanics all their own.

Ancient Pokémon hit hard and fast with raw damage, while Future Pokémon lean on Abilities and clever effects — a design split that reshaped the competitive metagame. Roaring Moon ex and Sandy Shocks ex lead the Ancient side; Iron Valiant ex and Iron Hands ex headline the Future, alongside returning favourites like Garchomp ex and Mewtwo ex.

For collectors, Paradox Rift is remembered for a deep run of Special Illustration Rares and gold Hyper Rares — the Roaring Moon ex and Iron Valiant ex special arts in particular became some of the era’s most chased cards.

Uncover the Anomalies of Area Zero! Dive into the clouds and explore a land that appears to be unbound by time! With ferocious attacks, Ancient Pokémon like Roaring Moon ex and Sandy Shocks ex appear alongside artificial Future Pokémon like Iron Valiant ex and Iron Hands ex. Meanwhile, Garchomp ex, Mewtwo ex, and others Terastallize to gain new types, as Armarouge ex, Gholdengo ex, and more Pokémon ex join the fray. Adventure awaits as timelines collide in the Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet—Paradox Rift expansion!

Set Highlights: Ancient and Future Collide

Paradox Rift is where the Scarlet & Violet era leaned fully into the Paradox theme from the video games. It carried the Pokémon ex and Tera Pokémon mechanics forward and layered two new card types on top — Ancient and Future — that would anchor competitive play for the rest of the era.

The two new card types split cleanly by play style. Ancient Pokémon favour raw, high-damage attacks — Roaring Moon ex can swing for huge numbers by discarding a Stadium — while Future Pokémon build around Abilities and support, like Iron Valiant ex’s Tachyon Bits placing damage counters straight onto the opponent’s Pokémon.

Around them, familiar Pokémon returned in force: Garchomp ex and Gholdengo ex became consistent, hard-hitting deck cores, and Iron Hands ex’s Amp You Very Much — taking an extra Prize card on a Knock Out — made it one of the most-played attackers of the whole era.

Paradox Rift launched with the full Scarlet & Violet retail line-up. Booster packs held 10 cards and came in four wrappers — Roaring Moon, Iron Valiant, Armarouge and Garchomp — sold in booster boxes of 36. Two Elite Trainer Boxes (Roaring Moon and Iron Valiant), Build & Battle Boxes and later premium collections rounded out the range.

English version vs. Japanese Variations

The English Paradox Rift is drawn from two simultaneous Japanese sets — Ancient Roar (sv4K), built around the prehistoric Ancient Pokémon, and Future Flash (sv4M), built around the robotic Future Pokémon — both released on 27 October 2023. The English release merges the two and folds in its own secret rares to reach a 182-card main set (266 with secret rares).

Fittingly, the two Japanese sets even split the type chart: Ancient Roar has no Lightning-type cards, and Future Flash has no Darkness-type cards. Collectors after the original printings chase both packs and both sealed boxes.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Roaring Moon ex — 251/182 (Special Illustration Rare)

Roaring Moon ex — 251/182 (Special Illustration Rare)

The chase card of the set. Its dramatic full-art scene of the Ancient dragon became one of the most valuable and widely chased cards of the Scarlet & Violet era — and, doubling as a format-defining attacker, it was hunted by players and collectors alike.

Iron Valiant ex — 249/182 (Special Illustration Rare)

Iron Valiant ex — 249/182 (Special Illustration Rare)

The Future side’s answer to Roaring Moon. Its sleek full-scene artwork of the robotic paradox made it a blue-chip Special Illustration Rare and a must-have for collectors chasing the set’s top hits.

Garchomp ex — 245/182 (Special Illustration Rare)

Garchomp ex — 245/182 (Special Illustration Rare)

A long-time fan favourite given a gorgeous full-art treatment. Popular in and out of competitive play, the Garchomp ex Special Illustration Rare is one of the set’s most sought-after non-paradox cards.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Roaring Moon ex — 124/182

Roaring Moon ex — 124/182

The Ancient headliner and one of the era’s premier attackers. Calamity Storm swings for big numbers — more still if you discard a Stadium — and paired with Ancient support it powered one of the most consistent aggressive decks of the format.

Iron Hands ex — 70/182

Iron Hands ex — 70/182

A near-ubiquitous Future attacker. Amp You Very Much takes an extra Prize card when it Knocks Out a Benched Pokémon, letting Iron Hands ex race down the prize trade — a staple that saw play for years.

Gholdengo ex — 139/182

Gholdengo ex — 139/182

A Metal-type engine and finisher. Coin Bonus draws cards as you play Item cards and Make It Rain scales with the Energy you discard, making Gholdengo ex the core of one of the format’s defining decks.

Trivia

  • Paradox Rift introduced two brand-new card types — Ancient and Future Pokémon — each with its own frame design and play style: Ancient cards favour raw, direct damage while Future cards build around Abilities and support effects.
  • The English set is a merge of two Japanese sets released the very same day: Ancient Roar (sv4K) and Future Flash (sv4M). The two even split the type chart — Ancient Roar contains no Lightning-type cards, and Future Flash contains no Darkness-type cards.
  • The set reintroduced Technical Machine cards, this time as Pokémon Tool cards that give the attached Pokémon an extra attack — a nod to the TMs of the main video games.
  • Two new items, the Ancient Booster Energy Capsule and Future Booster Energy Capsule, only work when attached to Ancient or Future Pokémon respectively, tying each mechanic to its own support.
  • It’s a rare-heavy set: among its 266 cards are 34 Illustration Rares, 15 Special Illustration Rares and 7 gold Hyper Rares.
  • Roaring Moon ex went on to headline one of the era’s strongest decks, and its Special Illustration Rare (251/182) became one of the most valuable single cards of the entire Scarlet & Violet run.
