Every few years the Pokémon TCG hits a hard reset, and in February 2017 the Sun & Moon Base Set was that reset. It launched the Alola era off the back of the Generation VII video games, and it arrived with a brand-new headline mechanic, a completely redrawn card frame, and a shiny new rarity that would go on to define pack-opening hype for the next three years. If you cracked packs in 2017, this is the set that told you the game had turned a page.
The big change was Pokémon-GX, which quietly retired the old Pokémon-EX cards. GX Pokémon hit hard and carried huge HP, but knocking one out still handed your opponent two Prize cards — the same high-stakes trade-off EX had trained everyone to respect. The twist was the printed GX attack: a single, game-defining move you were allowed to fire once per game, full stop. Suddenly every match had a trump card you had to earn the right to play, and deciding when to spend it became its own little skill.
It looked different, too. The Alolan regional forms made their TCG debut here, the reverse-holo pattern started showing off each card’s Energy type as a background motif, and a new tier of chase cards appeared at the very back of the list: full-art GX, gold secret Trainers and Energy, and the first Rainbow “Hyper” Rares the game had ever printed. There was even a nod to the old days — a guaranteed basic Energy card in every pack, just like the original Base Set.
Reception was warm rather than euphoric. Retrospectives tend to file Sun & Moon as a solid foundation more than a fan-favourite, but it did its job: it made GX feel special, it gave collectors a genuinely new thing to hunt, and it handed competitive players one deck — more on that below — that spent 2017 quietly driving everyone up the wall.

— Official Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon expansion description
Set Highlights: The Cards That Ran 2017
The chase lived at the back of the binder. Sun & Moon hid its best pulls behind the main list. Eight of the set’s eleven Pokémon-GX earned full-art versions, and above those sat the game’s first-ever Rainbow “Hyper” Rares (150–157) plus gold secret Trainers and Energy — a brand-new top tier for collectors to hunt. The Eeveelutions led the way: Umbreon-GX (80/149) and Espeon-GX (61/149) were the pulls everyone wanted, while the Lillie full art (147/149) quietly grew into one of the most coveted Supporter cards in the entire hobby. One odd footnote — the three starter finals (Decidueye, Incineroar and Primarina) were the only GX left out of the full-art and rainbow treatment.
The deck that ran the format. The overview promised a deck that spent 2017 quietly driving everyone up the wall — this is it. Espeon-GX (61/149) teamed with Garbodor to bounce, snipe and disrupt its way through the meta, one of the season’s most hated archetypes. It had company: Tauros-GX was a splashable one-of that turned up in almost every deck as a free attacker, Lapras-GX (35/149) gave Water decks a heavy GX finisher, and Solgaleo-GX (89/149) anchored Metal and turbo-Dark builds.
What was on the shelves. The launch shipped with two Elite Trainer Boxes — one built around Solgaleo-GX, one around Lunala-GX — alongside the 36-pack booster box and three theme decks: Forest Shadow (Grass), Roaring Heat (Fire/Fighting) and Bright Tide (Water/Lightning). Standard modern-set spread, but for a lot of players a Solgaleo or Lunala ETB was their first step into the Alola era.
A warm, not euphoric, welcome. Those debut Rainbow Rares looked spectacular and pulled like lightning strikes, kicking off the pull-rate grumbling that would shadow GX sets for years. The redesign split opinion too — some longtime collectors missed the glossier old foil under the new lower-shine “Water Web” holo pattern. History has been kind, though: Sun & Moon is remembered as the solid foundation the whole GX era was built on.
Print Versions & Collectors Info
Sun & Moon boosters brought back a fan-pleasing quirk: alongside the ten game cards, every pack included a guaranteed basic Energy (plus a code card for the online game), a deliberate callback to the earliest sets. That’s why you’ll see the packs described as both “10 cards” and “11 cards” depending on whether the listing counts that bonus Energy — both are technically right.
The English set shipped with five different booster wrappers, one each for the three Alolan starters at their final stage — Decidueye, Incineroar and Primarina — plus the two box legendaries, Solgaleo and Lunala. Sealed product ran deep: a 36-pack booster box, two Elite Trainer Boxes (a red Solgaleo version and a purple Lunala version), three theme decks (Forest Shadow, Roaring Heat and Bright Tide), and an Alolan Sandslash / Alolan Ninetales Trainer Kit for newcomers. As a modern set there’s no “1st Edition” stamp — that concept ended back in the WotC days — and it was printed in enormous numbers, so sealed product and singles remain easy to find today.
Variations between the Japanese and English language releases
Like every main Sun & Moon expansion, the English Sun & Moon Base Set isn’t a translation of one Japanese set — it’s a merger. In Japan the set arrived two months earlier (9 December 2016) as a pair of smaller “dual” sets: Collection Sun (SM1S) and Collection Moon (SM1M), each running to 60 numbered cards. The Pokémon Company then combined both, added a handful of extra cards, and re-numbered everything into the single 149-card (163 with secret rares) English release you see here.
That creates a few practical differences: the English set is larger than either Japanese set alone; the card numbers don’t line up between regions; and the reverse-holo and secret-rare structures differ. It’s the template the entire era would follow — two Japanese sets in, one bigger English set out.
Set List
The full 163-card checklist runs 1–149 for the main set, then 150–163 for the secret rares — the eight Rainbow Rares and six gold Trainer/Energy cards. Types and rarities are listed below; Trainer and Energy cards carry no Energy type.

Other Cards
Plenty of Sun & Moon Base-era cards live outside the numbered set itself:
Promos. The launch was surrounded by the first wave of SM Black Star Promos — the three starters Rowlet (SM01), Litten (SM02) and Popplio (SM03) from the Alola Collection boxes, a launch-event Pikachu (SM04), the chunky Snorlax-GX (SM05) from its own box, and the prerelease staff promos Shiinotic (SM10), Bruxish (SM11) and Passimian (SM12). None of these carry a /149 number — they’re “SMxx” promos that sit alongside the set rather than in it.
Theme-deck cards. The three theme decks — Forest Shadow (Grass), Roaring Heat (Fire) and Bright Tide (Water) — were built largely from base-set reprints, so their contents overlap the main list rather than adding brand-new cards.
Japanese-only cards. Because the English set merged Collection Sun and Collection Moon and re-numbered them, several cards from those Japanese sets were held back and only reached the West in later Sun & Moon expansions — one more reason the regional numbering never matches up.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
Desirability in this set is driven by two things: the Eeveelutions, and the novelty of being first. Values move constantly, so treat the notes below as relative pecking order and check live sold comps for the exact card and variant — regular GX, full art and Rainbow Rare diverge sharply.
Espeon-GX & Umbreon-GX
The consensus top of the set. Both Eeveelutions are wanted in every flavour — regular GX, full art and Rainbow Rare — and the rainbow versions carry extra cachet as some of the earliest ever made. If one card says “Sun & Moon Base Set” to collectors, it’s usually one of these two.
Tauros-GX & Gumshoos-GX (156 & 157)
Neither is a competitive powerhouse, but their Rainbow Rares are historically significant as among the very first Rainbow Rares printed. That “I was there” status keeps them on want-lists independent of playability.
Solgaleo-GX & Lunala-GX
The cover legendaries and the faces of the set’s two Elite Trainer Boxes. Their full-art and Rainbow versions are strong secondary chases and instantly recognisable to anyone who played the Gen VII games.
A quick reality check for graders: condition matters enormously on these. The full-art and rainbow textures show whitening and scratches easily, so high grades are scarcer than the print run suggests.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Decidueye-GX (12/149) — the one everyone remembers
The defining tournament card of the set, and the reason it earned its reputation. Decidueye’s Feather Arrow Ability let you place damage on the opponent’s Bench every single turn without attacking. Paired with Vileplume to switch off Item cards, the “item-lock Decidueye” deck became a genuinely oppressive control shell that dominated conversation through the 2017 season — the kind of deck people either loved piloting or couldn’t wait to see rotate.
Lapras-GX (35/149)
A splashable, efficient Water attacker with a strong GX attack that slotted into all sorts of decks. Not flashy, but a reliable early-era staple that saw plenty of play.
Lurantis-GX (15/149)
The engine behind Grass energy-acceleration builds. On its own it was a role-player, but alongside the right partners it kept the format’s Grass decks ticking over.
Taken as a whole, Sun & Moon was solid rather than format-warping — Decidueye-GX was the standout that caused a stir, while much of the rest was dependable role-player quality in a fast metagame.
Trivia & Pop Culture
Two Japanese sets in a trench coat. The English set is a merge of two simultaneously released Japanese decks, Collection Sun and Collection Moon (together, SM1). Unusually, most cards appeared in only one of the two — only a handful, including Cosmog, Cosmoem and Eevee, showed up in both — so the English release stitched the two halves into one 163-card set.
The Rainbow Rare is born. This is the set that kicked off the Rainbow “Hyper” Rare finish that would become a signature of the whole Sun & Moon era. Purists will note a couple of early SM-era promos are sometimes cited in the “first rainbow” debate, so it’s fairest to say the finish debuted with the Sun & Moon launch rather than crowning a single card.
GX vs EX. The community generally read GX cards as a visual upgrade on the old EX cards — bigger art windows gave illustrators more room to play — even as some grumbled that the digital 5ban Graphics renders could look a little lifeless up close.
A nod to 1999. Bringing back a basic Energy in every pack was a small but deliberate bit of nostalgia, echoing the original Base Set experience two decades on. The next set, Guardians Rising, would build on this foundation and hand the era one of its most format-defining cards.
