HS—Unleashed, the second set of the HeartGold & SoulSilver series, arrived in May 2010 with a clever central conceit. Where the base set had introduced Pokémon LEGEND with the solo mascots Ho-Oh and Lugia, Unleashed put the mechanic to work on Johto’s roaming legendary beasts — Entei, Raikou and Suicune — pairing them up two at a time.
The set built out the young HGSS toolkit: six new Pokémon Prime, a stack of format-shaping Trainer cards, and those three beast LEGENDs. It was smaller than the base set, but a dense and influential one.
Its heart, though, was the trio that gave it its name.
Pokémon LEGENDs Freed… Pokémon Prime Released… HS—Unleashed!
Raikou… Entei… Suicune… Alone, each of these Legendary Pokémon is a force to be reckoned with, but let loose in pairs, they become amazing LEGEND cards! In the HS—Unleashed expansion, you’ll find Pokémon Prime bursting at the seams, powerful Pokémon like Jirachi and Shaymin raring to join the battle, and Pokémon LEGENDs joining forces for twice the excitement! Are you a powerful enough Trainer to command what’s been Unleashed?
— official HS—Unleashed expansion blurb
The Legendary Beasts, in Pairs
Unleashed took the two-card Pokémon LEGEND format and did something elegant with it: rather than one legend per card, it spread Johto’s three legendary beasts across three LEGENDs, each pairing two of them. Entei & Raikou, Raikou & Suicune, and Suicune & Entei meant every beast appeared on two different cards — a neat cyclic design that rewarded collecting the whole set.
Entei & Raikou LEGEND (90 and 91) was a Poké-Power hunter. Detonation Spin hit for a steady 90, but its Thunder Fall attack dumped all its Energy to blast 80 damage onto every Pokémon in play with a Poké-Power — a devastating answer to the era’s Poké-Power engines, at the cost of a big Energy investment.
Raikou & Suicune LEGEND (92 and 93) was pure aggression with a safety valve. Thunderbolt Spear struck for a massive 150 (with 50 in recoil), while Aurora Gain offered a gentler 50-damage swing that healed the LEGEND back up — letting it trade blows and stay standing.
Entei & Raikou LEGEND (90 & 91/95)
A two-card LEGEND and a Poké-Power hunter. Detonation Spin hits for 90, while Thunder Fall dumps all its Energy to deal 80 to every Pokémon in play with a Poké-Power.
Raikou & Suicune LEGEND (92 & 93/95)
Aggression with a safety valve. Thunderbolt Spear swings for a huge 150 (50 recoil), and Aurora Gain trades down to a 50-damage hit that heals it back up.
Print Versions
Fittingly, three of Unleashed’s four booster arts showed the legendary beasts — Raikou, Entei and Suicune — alongside the fan-favourite Crobat. Every pack was a shot at a piece of a beast LEGEND, one of the six Pokémon Prime, or the set’s hidden secret.

Six Pokémon Prime
Unleashed doubled the game’s roster of Pokémon Prime, adding six more — Crobat, Kingdra, Lanturn, Steelix, Tyranitar and Ursaring — and a couple became genuine competitive fixtures.
Kingdra Prime (85) was a spread-damage engine. Its Spray Splash Poké-Power let you drop a damage counter on any of your opponent’s Pokémon every single turn — for free — and with more than one Kingdra in play, those counters piled up fast. “Kingdra” decks turned that trickle into a flood.
Tyranitar Prime (88) hit like a landslide. Darkness Howl spread 20 damage across the whole board, Power Claw punched for 60 while ignoring the defender’s abilities, and Megaton Tail delivered a huge 120 — a heavyweight Darkness attacker with an answer for everything.
Kingdra Prime (85/95)
A spread-damage engine. Spray Splash drops a free damage counter on any opposing Pokémon every turn — stack a few Kingdra and the board fills with damage before you even attack.
Tyranitar Prime (88/95)
A heavyweight Darkness attacker. Darkness Howl chips the whole board for 20, Power Claw hits for 60 ignoring the defender’s abilities, and Megaton Tail crashes down for 120.
Staple Trainers
Some of Unleashed’s most lasting contributions weren’t Pokémon at all. Rare Candy (82) returned to let you evolve a Basic Pokémon straight to its Stage 2 in a single step, skipping the middle entirely — the evolution accelerator that made fast, powerful decks possible, and a fixture of the game for years.
Judge (78), meanwhile, was disruption in a card. This Supporter forced both players to shuffle their hands into their decks and draw four fresh cards — a way to wreck an opponent’s carefully built hand while refilling your own. Between them, these two Trainers shaped countless decklists across the era.
Rare Candy (82/95)
The evolution accelerator. It jumps a Basic Pokémon straight to its Stage 2, skipping the middle stage — the card that made fast, powerful Evolution decks possible for years.
Judge (78/95)
Disruption in a Supporter. Both players shuffle their hands into their decks and draw four — a clean way to shatter an opponent’s built-up hand while topping your own back up.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
Unleashed (HS2, May 2010) built its collector ceiling on curved-corner Prime ultra-rares, the beast LEGEND cards, and the rare Alph Lithograph secret. In gem-mint condition the low-population Primes — Kingdra, Ursaring and Tyranitar — command the real money.
Alph Lithograph (Secret Rare)
The set’s true secret rare, an all-Unown lithograph pulled at long odds; PSA 10 copies bring around $1,189 and raw examples about $83.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
In the 2010-2011 HGSS-on Modified format, Unleashed delivered one of the era’s best decks plus staple techs and Supporters. Kingdra Prime headlined its own spread archetype, while Crobat Prime and key trainers slotted into nearly everything competitive.
Trivia

- The set added six new Pokémon Prime: Crobat, Kingdra, Lanturn, Steelix, Tyranitar and Ursaring.
- Rare Candy and Judge, two of the era’s most-played Trainer cards, appeared in the set.
- Its secret card was the second Alph Lithograph, continuing a series begun in HeartGold & SoulSilver.
