Phantasmal Flames booster pack (Mega Charizard X)

Mega Evolution—Phantasmal Flames is the second expansion of the Pokémon TCG’s Mega Evolution Series, released in English on November 14, 2025. The set collects 130 cards — a 94-card main set plus 36 secret rares — and is built around six new Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, led by the fire-and-shadow headliner Mega Charizard X ex.

Where the base Mega Evolution set spread ten Mega ex across every energy type, Phantasmal Flames tightens its focus to a Fire-and-Darkness theme — a “shadow and flame” pairing that runs from Charizard and the Charcadet→Ceruledge line through Gengar, Sharpedo and a deep bench of Dark-types. At just 94 cards before secret rares it is the smallest main set the game has printed in years, yet it is stacked with chase cards.

It is also the English home of Japan’s Inferno X expansion and the two MEGA Starter Sets (Mega Gengar ex and Mega Diancie ex), and it carries the base set’s mechanic forward: every ex here is either a three-Prize Mega Evolution Pokémon ex or a supporting Pokémon ex — no Tera cards in sight. Sealed booster boxes remain on shelves, joined by a lavish Mega Charizard X ex Ultra-Premium Collection.

Feel the heat as Mega Evolution burns brighter! Mega Charizard X ex heads a fiery, shadow-touched line-up alongside Mega Gengar ex, Mega Heracross ex, Mega Sharpedo ex, Mega Lopunny ex and Mega Diancie ex — each a Mega Evolution Pokémon ex packing enormous power for three Prize cards. Fan the flames and Mega Evolve your team in Mega Evolution—Phantasmal Flames!

Fire and Phantom

Mega Charizard X pack artwork

Phantasmal Flames is the series at its most theatrical — a duel of fire and shadow fought across a darkened battlefield. The official reveal framed it exactly that way: searing blue flames on one side, a chill deep enough to rival the heat on the other.

At the heart of it is Mega Charizard X ex, the black-scaled Charizard whose flames burn blue-hot, answered by the creeping cold of Mega Gengar ex. Around that fire-and-phantom clash the set gathers a Fire- and Darkness-leaning cast — Mega Heracross ex, Mega Lopunny ex, Mega Diancie ex and Mega Sharpedo ex.

Six Mega Evolution Pokémon ex made this the boldest line-up the young series had yet fielded, and its night-lit, blue-and-violet mood sets Phantasmal Flames apart from the daylight Kalos of the sets that follow. In Japan the cards come from the aptly named Inferno X expansion.

Highlights

The set’s pull-worthy chase cards are led by two versions of Mega Charizard X ex — a Special Illustration Rare by danciao and the set’s single gold Mega Hyper Rare — backed by a run of Special Illustration Rares and a stand-out Meowth Illustration Rare.

Japanese Release & the Dual Set

In Japan the Mega era’s fire chapter arrived on September 26, 2025 as the expansion pack Inferno X (インフェルノX), a roughly 80-card MEGA-series set headlined by Mega Charizard X ex.

Alongside it came two ready-to-play MEGA Starter SetsMega Gengar ex and Mega Diancie ex. The English Phantasmal Flames stitches all three together: Inferno X supplies the bulk of the set, while a handful of cards (and the two supporting Mega ex) are pulled in from the starter decks, which is why the English list runs slightly larger than Inferno X on its own.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Mega Charizard X ex 130/094

Mega Charizard X ex — 130/094 (Mega Hyper Rare)

The set’s crown jewel. The gold Mega Hyper Rare Mega Charizard X ex is the only card at this rarity in Phantasmal Flames and its single most valuable pull — the card the whole expansion is built to sell.

Mega Charizard X ex 125/094

Mega Charizard X ex — 125/094 (Special Illustration Rare)

The Special Illustration Rare by danciao is the artwork chase of the set, regularly trading near four figures in top condition and outrunning every other Mega SIR here.

Meowth 106/094

Meowth — 106/094 (Illustration Rare)

The surprise breakout. Uninori’s Meowth Illustration Rare became one of the set’s most sought-after cards, running ahead of several of the Mega Special Illustration Rares despite being “just” an IR.

Dawn 129/094

Dawn — 129/094 (Special Illustration Rare)

The top Trainer-focused chase — a full-scene Special Illustration Rare of Dawn that’s become a staple want for character-art collectors.

Mega Lopunny ex 128/094

Mega Lopunny ex — 128/094 (Special Illustration Rare)

One of the set’s cleaner Special Illustration Rares, and a strong secondary chase behind the twin Charizards.

For Players: Most Powerful Cards

Mega Charizard X ex 013/094

Mega Charizard X ex

The set’s marquee attacker. Inferno X does 90 damage for each Fire Energy you discard from your Pokémon — an uncapped hit that can one-shot almost anything if you’ve loaded the board, powering the set’s defining fire deck.

Mega Gengar ex 056/094

Mega Gengar ex

A 230-damage Void Gale plus the Shadowy Concealment Ability, which makes your Dark Pokémon give up one fewer Prize when Knocked Out by an opposing Pokémon ex — a rare built-in answer to the set’s own three-Prize Megas.

Mega Diancie ex 041/094

Mega Diancie ex

Diamond Coat shaves 30 damage off every attack it takes, and Garland Ray scales to 120 per Energy discarded — a bulky, flexible Psychic attacker.

Mega Lopunny ex 084/094

Mega Lopunny ex

A fast Colorless closer: Gale Thrust adds 170 damage if Lopunny jumped from the Bench that turn, and Spiky Hopper (160) ignores any effects on the opponent’s Active, punching through protective Abilities.

Mega Heracross ex 004/094

Mega Heracross ex

A punishing counter-attacker: Juggernaut Horn pays you back 100+ for damage taken last turn, while Mountain Ramming (170) mills the top two cards of your opponent’s deck.

Trivia

  • Phantasmal Flames is the second expansion of the Mega Evolution Series, following the base Mega Evolution set and preceding Ascended Heroes.
  • At 94 cards before secret rares, it is the smallest main set the Pokémon TCG has printed in years — a deliberately tight, chase-heavy release.
  • The set leans hard into a Fire-and-Darkness “shadow and flame” theme; Darkness is the single most-represented type in the whole expansion.
  • Mega Charizard X ex appears at four different numbers — 013/094 (Double Rare), 109/094 (Ultra Rare), 125/094 (Special Illustration Rare) and 130/094, the set’s only gold Mega Hyper Rare.
  • The English list is a merger of three Japanese products: the Inferno X expansion plus the MEGA Starter Sets Mega Gengar ex and Mega Diancie ex.
  • Several Pokémon were cut from the main set and released as promos instead — Charcadet, the Cottonee/Whimsicott and Sneasel/Weavile lines, and the Oricorio ex Special Illustration Rare.
  • As the first Charizard-fronted set of the Mega era, Phantasmal Flames drew noticeably heavier launch demand than the base Mega Evolution set, and its Ultra-Premium Collection became one of the most sought-after sealed products of the era.
