Mega Evolution booster pack (Mega Lucario ex)

Scarlet & Violet is over — Mega Evolution is the beginning of a whole new era. Released worldwide on 26 September 2025, it is the first main expansion of the Mega Evolution Series, and it does exactly what its name promises: it brings Mega Evolution back to the Pokémon TCG for the first time since 2016. The set collects 188 cards — a 132-card main set plus 56 secret rares — and is built around ten brand-new Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, one for each of the game’s energy types.

The launch is timed to promote the video game Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which put Mega Evolution back at the centre of the franchise. Flanked by Mega Gardevoir ex and Mega Lucario ex as its twin faces, the expansion trades the Scarlet & Violet era’s Tera mechanic for the returning, reinvented Mega Evolution — and, notably, brings sealed booster boxes back to shelves after the box-free Black Bolt & White Flare release.

There are no ordinary Pokémon ex in the set at all: every ex here is a Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, making this the most focused “mechanic” set the game has seen in years.

Mega Evolve your strength to the next stage! Mega Evolution Pokémon ex burst back into the Pokémon TCG with colossal HP and devastating attacks — Mega Gardevoir ex, Mega Lucario ex, Mega Venusaur ex and more lead a brand-new era. Raise your game, take the risk, and unleash the power of Mega Evolution!

Mega Evolution Returns

Mega Lucario and Mega Gardevoir artwork

After three years of Scarlet & Violet, this set does exactly what its name says: it brings Mega Evolution roaring back to the Pokémon TCG for the first time in nearly a decade. It launched worldwide alongside Pokémon Legends: Z-A, carrying the video game’s Mega revival onto the tabletop.

The set is built around ten brand-new Mega Evolution Pokémon ex — one for every energy type — led by fan favourites like Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex. It is the foundation the whole series is built on — and since it is where the mechanic makes its debut, here is how Mega Evolution actually works.

How Mega Evolution Works

Mega Evolution first appeared in the video games in 2013 (Pokémon X & Y) and ran in the TCG from 2014 to 2016 as “M” Pokémon-EX. Back then a Mega evolved from a fully-evolved Basic EX — and Mega Evolving ended your turn on the spot, which made those cards notoriously slow. After nearly a decade away, Mega Evolution returns here completely redesigned.

Mega Gardevoir ex

Evolves through the normal chain

A modern Mega Evolution Pokémon ex is reached by ordinary evolution. Mega Lucario ex is a Stage 1 that evolves from Riolu; Mega Gardevoir ex and Mega Venusaur ex are Stage 2s (Ralts → Kirlia → Mega Gardevoir ex). Crucially, evolving into a Mega no longer ends your turn — you can Mega Evolve and attack in the same turn, so these are aggressive, playable cards rather than the sluggish Megas of the past.

Mega Lucario ex

Enormous power — for three Prizes

The trade-off is the balancing act of the whole era: when a Mega Evolution Pokémon ex is Knocked Out, your opponent takes three Prize cards instead of the usual two. Marked with a distinctive black-and-yellow Mega symbol, these cards hit for huge damage off towering HP (many sit at 330–350+), but a single mistake can hand the game away. High risk, high reward.

Every one of the set’s ten Mega Evolution ex follows this template — one per energy type — so building around them means protecting a three-Prize liability while it swings for the fences. It is the defining puzzle of the Mega Evolution Series.

Japanese Release & the Dual Set

In Japan, Mega Evolution began not as one set but as a pair, both released on 1 August 2025: Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia. The two share the Mega Evolution theme but split the headliners — Mega Brave is the Mega Lucario ex side, Mega Symphonia the Mega Gardevoir ex side. In a lovely touch, each set is named after its flagship Mega’s signature attack: Mega Lucario ex’s Mega Brave and Mega Gardevoir ex’s Mega Symphonia.

The English Mega Evolution expansion combines both Japanese sets into a single 132-card main set, and pulls a handful of Trainer cards from the Japanese Premium Trainer Box MEGA as well. Unlike the Scarlet & Violet era’s Japan-to-English re-cuts, the two regions launched only weeks apart — Japan on 1 August, the West on 26 September 2025.

Sealed Products

As the flagship launch of a new era, Mega Evolution shipped with a full spread of sealed products — and, for the first time since Prismatic Evolutions, a proper sealed booster box:

Mega Evolution Booster Box

Booster Box

A full 36-pack display box. The set’s booster packs carry four different wrapper arts (Mega Lucario, Mega Gardevoir, Mega Venusaur and Mega Kangaskhan), so a sealed box spreads all four across its packs.

A ready-to-play prerelease kit: a 40-card ready-to-play deck, four booster packs and one of four exclusive holo promos (Meganium, Inteleon, Alakazam or Lunatone) with brand-new artwork.

Bulbasaur Illustration Rare promo

And more

The launch was rounded out by an Enhanced Booster Box (packing a stamped Bulbasaur Illustration Rare promo), Mega Heroes Mini Tins, three-pack and checklane blisters, 4- and 9-pocket portfolios and a Fun Pack — plus store-exclusive promos (see below).Pictured: the stamped Bulbasaur Illustration Rare from the Enhanced Booster Box.

Trivia

  • Mega Evolution is the first main expansion of the Mega Evolution Series, ending the Scarlet & Violet era and beginning a new one.
  • It marks the return of Mega Evolution to the TCG after roughly nine years — the mechanic last appeared in 2016, near the end of the XY era.
  • Unlike the old XY-era Megas, which ended your turn when you Mega Evolved, the new Mega Evolution Pokémon ex evolve through the normal chain and can attack the same turn — but give up three Prize cards when Knocked Out.
  • The set contains no ordinary Pokémon ex — every ex is a Mega Evolution ex, ten in total, one for each energy type.
  • The two Japanese sets it combines, Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia, are each named after the signature attack of their flagship Mega — Mega Lucario ex’s Mega Brave and Mega Gardevoir ex’s Mega Symphonia.
  • The launch was timed to promote the video game Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which returned Mega Evolution to the spotlight.
  • After the box-free Black Bolt & White Flare, Mega Evolution brought the sealed 36-pack booster box back to retail.
  • Its two gold Mega Hyper Rares — Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex — were a brand-new top rarity for the era and immediately became the set’s most valuable cards.
