Celestial Storm Rayquaza-GX Elite Trainer Box

“Nature’s Wrath in Full Fury” was the tagline, and Celestial Storm — the seventh Sun & Moon expansion, out in August 2018 — meant it. This is a Rayquaza set through and through: the emerald sky serpent is on the box, on the Elite Trainer Box, and at the centre of both the collector chase and one of the format’s best decks.

It’s also a big warm hit of Hoenn nostalgia. The Lati twins, the three Hoenn starter lines, and a Trainer roster of Steven, Lisia and Tate & Liza give the set a Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald reunion feel, while the Prism Star (◆) mechanic carries on with Jirachi, Latias and Latios specials.

On the shelf it was one of 2018’s most anticipated pulls, almost entirely on the strength of Rayquaza-GX — a card that was genuinely great to open and genuinely great to play. That’s a rare double, and it’s why the set is remembered fondly.

Nature’s Wrath in Full Fury! Watch out for the vortex! It’s a season of furious emerald storms and a sky alive with portents, as Pokémon and creatures from Ultra Space clash. Some ride the storm, and others defy it, with a lineup including Articuno-GX, Blaziken-GX, Scizor-GX, Stakataka-GX, and the amazing Rayquaza-GX, plus new cards featuring Latios, Latias, and Jirachi. Face the winds of change head-on in the Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon—Celestial Storm expansion!

— Official Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon—Celestial Storm expansion description

Set Highlights: Rayquaza Rides the Storm

A Hoenn homecoming. Fans nicknamed Celestial Storm “Hoenn Havoc,” and for good reason — it’s soaked in Generation III nostalgia. Rayquaza headlines (the meteor-stopping mascot of Emerald and ORAS’s Delta Episode, which suits a set called Celestial Storm perfectly), backed by the Eon duo Latias and Latios, the Wish Pokémon Jirachi, and Hoenn faces like Tate & Liza. Even the two theme decks were led by Hoenn starters, Sceptile and Swampert.

Three Prism Stars. Celestial Storm carried three diamond-marked Prism Star (◆) cards, all Legendaries: Jirachi ◆ (97/168), Latias ◆ (107/168) and Latios ◆ (108/168) — one-per-deck specials that leaned right into the set’s Hoenn flavour.

Rayquaza-GX, the chase and the deck. The card everyone wanted was Rayquaza-GX (109/168), with its secret Rainbow Rare (177/168) sitting at the very top of the pull list. It wasn’t only a collector’s piece: paired with Vikavolt’s energy acceleration, “Dragon Break” Rayquaza-GX scaled off its attached Grass and Lightning Energy to become a top-tier attacker across the 2018–19 season.

A collector-friendly footnote. Unusually for a big chase card, Rayquaza-GX got a reprint just months later as the headliner of the Battle Arena Deck: Rayquaza-GX vs. Ultra Necrozma-GX — a ready-to-play product that kept the playable copy cheap and accessible even while the rainbow version stayed pricey.

Boosters held ten cards, and the English set shipped with four wrapper artworks — Rayquaza, Blaziken, Jirachi and Stakataka. A 36-pack booster box topped the range, with a Rayquaza-GX Elite Trainer Box (shown left) as the collector centrepiece and two theme decks: Leaf Charge (a Grass/Lightning Sceptile build) and Hydro Fury (a Water/Fire Swampert build). A Build & Battle Box and a run of Tapu-themed promo blisters rounded out the launch. As a modern set there’s no “1st Edition,” and it remains easy to find sealed or as singles.

Celestial Storm is a proper melting-pot set. Rather than porting a single Japanese pack, the English release — 183 cards strong, out on August 3rd, 2018 — was stitched together from two separate Japanese sets: the main SM7 expansion Sky-Splitting Charisma (蒼空のカリスマ, 96 cards, June 1st, 2018) plus the smaller Champion Road (SM6b, 66 cards) sub-set. Add a run of English secret rares on top and you land at that chunky 183-card total.

Rayquaza-GX headlines in every region, and the Prism Star trio — Latios (◇), Latias (◇) and Jirachi (◇) — carries over the one-per-deck gimmick. Because two Japanese sets were merged into one, the English Celestial Storm ends up noticeably bigger and more varied than either Japanese pack on its own, which is part of what makes it such a deep set to collect.

Set List

The 183-card checklist runs 1–168 for the main set (Full Art GX and Supporters, plus the Prism Star cards, sit within that range), then 169–183 for the secret rares — the nine Rainbow Rare GX and six gold Trainer/Energy cards. Trainer and Energy cards carry no Energy type.

The Prism Star (◆) cards

The Prism Star (◆) cards

Three of the one-per-deck ◆ specials landed here: Jirachi ◆, Latias ◆ and Latios ◆. Latias ◆ in particular — its Dreamy Mist Ability loads basic Energy from the discard onto your Benched Dragons — became a near-mandatory piece of the Rayquaza deck (see below).

Tate & Liza (Full Art) 148/168

A Hoenn reunion

The Full Art Supporter line-up is pure ORAS nostalgia: Lisia, Steven’s Resolve and Tate & Liza, alongside classic utility trainers like TV Reporter and Copycat. For anyone who grew up in the Hoenn era, it’s a lovely binder page.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Values move constantly, so treat this as a pecking order and check live sold and graded comps for the exact card and variant.

Lisia — Full Art

Lisia — Full Art

The set’s standout collector card. The Hoenn Contest idol’s full art is routinely named the most sought-after card in Celestial Storm — a case where a beloved character and a gorgeous illustration beat raw playability to the top of the want-list.

Rayquaza-GX (all finishes)

Rayquaza-GX (all finishes)

The marquee Pokémon chase, wanted in every version — regular, Full Art (160) and the emblematic Rainbow Rare (177). As the box legendary, the ETB face and a top-tier tournament card, demand runs deep and durable.

The rest of the chase

Behind Rayquaza and Lisia sit the other Rainbow Rares — Scizor-GX and Blaziken-GX draw the most collector attention — plus the Tate & Liza and Steven’s Resolve full arts. Condition matters hugely on the textured rainbows, so clean high grades stay scarce.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Rayquaza-GX (109/168) — a Dragon Break for the ages

Rayquaza-GX (109/168) — a Dragon Break for the ages

One of the era’s premier attackers. Dragon Break deals 30 damage for every basic Grass and Lightning Energy attached across your whole board — so with the right engine it scaled into one-shot territory alarmingly fast — while Stormy Winds self-accelerated on the Bench and the Tempest-GX attack discarded your hand to draw ten, a built-in reset. Cheap, explosive and consistent.

Latias ◆ (107/168)

Latias ◆ (107/168)

The quiet enabler. Latias ◆’s Dreamy Mist spread basic Energy from the discard across your Benched Dragons, giving the Rayquaza deck a second acceleration lever on top of Vikavolt. Small card, big role.

Steven’s Resolve

Steven’s Resolve

A powerful setup Supporter: search your deck for any three cards, then end your turn. The end-of-turn cost kept it honest, but for a combo or setup turn it was superb — and very on-theme for the Hoenn Champion.

The canonical build paired Rayquaza-GX with Vikavolt from the Sun & Moon base set, whose Strong Charge Ability fetched exactly the Grass and Lightning Energy that Dragon Break counts. It was a recognised top-tier deck across the 2018–19 season.

Trivia & Pop Culture

The Rayquaza celebration. Between the box art, the Elite Trainer Box, a pack wrapper, a top-tier deck and an iconic rainbow rare, Celestial Storm functioned as a full-on Rayquaza tribute — fitting for the sky-serpent mascot of Pokémon Emerald.

Hoenn, revisited. The Lati twins, the three starter lines and the Steven/Lisia/Tate & Liza trio gave the set a Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald warmth that pulled in returning fans — a recurring, and clearly successful, Sun & Moon-era strategy of leaning on nostalgia.

Art worth framing. Rayquaza-GX’s work came from 5ban Graphics, Latias ◆ from Anesaki Dynamic, and the Lisia full art is regularly singled out as one of the prettiest character cards of the era. The next set, Lost Thunder, would be the biggest of the whole Sun & Moon run.
