If a set could be described as “a lot,” it’s Lost Thunder. Released in November 2018, SM8 arrived as the largest main-series English set the Pokémon TCG had ever produced — 214 cards in the numbered set, ballooning to 236 once the secret rares are counted, and the first booster expansion ever to break the 200-card barrier.
That sheer size is the story. For deckbuilders it was a playground: seven Prism Star cards, a wave of Ultra Beasts, a deep bench of Trainers and reprints, and enough single-prize toys to keep rogue-deck fans busy for a year. For completionists it was faintly terrifying — a 200-plus-card wall that made pulling a full set a genuine campaign.
The set’s competitive legacy is Lost March, a spiritual successor to Night March built around Jumpluff and Natu that gave single-prize decks a real seat at the top table. Its collector legacy is Lugia-GX — the marquee chase — backed by the brand-new Mythical Zeraora-GX and a fan-favourite Alolan Ninetales-GX.
Reception was warm, if a touch overwhelmed. Lost Thunder is remembered as one of the richest, most content-heavy sets of the Sun & Moon era — leaning hard on Johto nostalgia (Celebi, Lugia, Tyranitar, Ho-Oh) while handing the format one of its most beloved budget archetypes.
Travel to the forest hills, where the fragrance of incense from ancient shrines and the sparks of high voltage Pokémon fill the air! The Sun & Moon—Lost Thunder expansion fuses the new with the traditional, featuring Celebi and Ditto, plus Blacephalon-GX, Lugia-GX, Tyranitar-GX, and the newest Mythical Pokémon, Zeraora-GX! Call down the big thunder and charge up your deck with the high-powered Pokémon in the Sun & Moon—Lost Thunder expansion!
— Official Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon—Lost Thunder expansion description
Set Highlights: Into the Lost Zone
The biggest set the game had ever seen. At 214 cards in the main set — 236 counting its secret rares — Lost Thunder was, at release, the largest English expansion the Pokémon TCG had ever printed. It wrapped that huge list in thick Generation II nostalgia (Ho-Oh, Lugia, Tyranitar and a memorable Granbull), with a dash of Sinnoh via Cyrus and Giratina.
The newest Mythical headlines. Front and centre was Zeraora-GX (86/214), the Mythical Pokémon fresh from the 2018 movie The Power of Us — a fast Lightning attacker that paired neatly with Tapu Koko. The set also dealt out eight one-per-deck Prism Star (◆) cards, including Celebi ◆, Cyrus ◆, Xerneas ◆ and a genuinely useful Ditto ◆.
The Lost Zone returns. Lost Thunder’s signature idea was reviving the Lost Zone — a one-way “removed from the game” pile — and building cards around filling it. That handed the format Lost March, a brilliant budget deck where Jumpluff, Natu and Trumbeak hit harder for every card sent to the Lost Zone. Alongside single-prize control pieces like Granbull (138/214), it made Lost Thunder a favourite of players who liked winning without a binder full of GX chase cards.
Big in every sense. The flip side of all that generosity was completion: with 236 cards and a long tail of rainbow and gold secrets, finishing a master set was a real grind. Even so, Lost Thunder is fondly remembered — a fun, creative, budget-friendly set rather than a broken one.

Variations between the Japanese and English language releases
Lost Thunder is the biggest set of the entire Sun & Moon era, and that heft comes down to how the West assembled it. Japan’s core release was Super-Burst Impact (SM8), a 103-card expansion that dropped on September 7th, 2018. By the time it reached the English market on November 2nd, 2018 it had been bulked out with cards drawn from adjacent Japanese sub-sets and a huge 22-card secret-rare run, landing at a colossal 236 cards (214 numbered).
That scale is Lost Thunder’s whole identity — a deep, varied set drafted from a far wider pool than any single Japanese pack. Fan favourites like Tyranitar-GX, Zeraora-GX and the notorious Blacephalon-GX ‘Fireball Circus’ engine all made the crossing intact.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
Lugia-GX — #159/214
The marquee chase of the set, with a coveted Full Art (207) and Rainbow Rare (227). A Johto legend headlining a Johto-flavoured expansion — it was always going to be the poster card.
Zeraora-GX — #86/214
The set’s brand-new Mythical, and a genuinely strong card to boot (Rainbow Rare 201). A flexible Lightning attacker that collectors and competitive players both wanted.
Alolan Ninetales-GX — #132/214
Beautiful, beloved, and competitively relevant — its Rainbow Rare (225) is one of the prettier pulls of the era.
Tyranitar-GX — #121/214
A heavyweight Darkness GX (Rainbow Rare 223) rounding out the set’s nostalgic Johto trio alongside Lugia and Celebi.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Lost March — Jumpluff #5 & Natu #66
The archetype that defined the set. These single-prize attackers deal damage scaling with the number of same-named Pokémon in your discard, reviving the Night March playstyle and giving budget decks a top-tier home.
Granbull — #138/214
A non-GX hitter swinging for around 160 damage on a single Energy, handing single-prize and budget decks real tournament teeth.
Blacephalon-GX — #52/214
Paired with Naganadel’s Energy acceleration, it powered a high-ceiling one-shot Fire deck that was among the format’s scariest.
Trivia & Pop Culture
- The 200-card barrier. Lost Thunder was the first Pokémon TCG booster expansion ever to exceed 200 cards, and the largest main set at release (236 total).
- Johto love letter. The set leans hard on Generation II nostalgia — Celebi, Lugia, Tyranitar and Ho-Oh all feature prominently alongside the new Mythical Zeraora.
- Beasts of legend. The two theme decks were built around the Johto legendary beasts — Entei (Blazing Volcano) and Raikou (Storm Caller).
- Lost, but found. Its “Lost” theming traces to the Japanese Super-Burst Impact set and the recurring Lost Zone mechanic — a nod that would pay off years later in the Lost Origin era.
