If Team Up introduced the TAG TEAM mechanic, Unbroken Bonds is where it truly caught fire — literally. Released in May 2019, this enormous 214-card set (234 with secret rares) delivered the single most important deck of the year and a bench of support cards that would outlive the set by a mile.
That headline deck is Reshiram & Charizard-GX — “ReshiZard” — a Fire Tag Team that, fuelled by Welder, could land turn-two knockouts on almost anything. It became one of the defining archetypes of the entire Sun & Moon era and kept winning well into the next block.
Underneath the fireworks, Unbroken Bonds quietly restocked the game’s toolbox. Dedenne-GX gave every deck a draw-refresh button; Green’s Exploration handed low-ability decks a two-for-one tutor; and a strong class of Tag Teams (Gardevoir & Sylveon-GX, Greninja & Zoroark-GX, Marshadow & Machamp-GX) rounded out the roster. It also brought Melmetal into the TCG, tying into the Meltan craze from Pokémon GO.
Reception was excellent. It’s remembered as one of the strongest, highest-value sets of the era — deep for deckbuilders, generous to collectors with a 20-card secret-rare lineup, and home to a genuine all-time-great archetype.
Bonds Tempered in Battle! When you have a partner you can count on, nothing can stop you! The TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX in the Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon—Unbroken Bonds expansion show the colossal power of teamwork, including Reshiram & Charizard-GX, the Ultra Beasts Pheromosa & Buzzwole-GX, and Gardevoir & Sylveon-GX—plus, Lucario teams up with the newly discovered Melmetal! With trust and practice, these Pokémon can tackle just about anything, so check out the amazing Pokémon pairings in the Sun & Moon—Unbroken Bonds expansion!
— Official Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon—Unbroken Bonds expansion description
Set Highlights: ReshiZard Lights the Fuse
A stacked Tag Team roster. Unbroken Bonds matched Lost Thunder’s giant 214-card main set and packed it with seven Tag Team Pokémon-GX. The headliner was Reshiram & Charizard-GX (20/214) — “ReshiZard” — but it shared the roster with Pheromosa & Buzzwole-GX (1/214), Greninja & Zoroark-GX (107/214), Lucario & Melmetal-GX (120/214) and Gardevoir & Sylveon-GX (130/214), among others.
The card that built a deck: Welder. The set’s most important card wasn’t a GX at all. Welder (189/214) let you attach two Fire Energy from your hand and draw three cards — acceleration and card draw stapled onto a single Supporter. Bolted onto Reshiram & Charizard-GX, it created the defining deck of the 2019–2020 season: fast, explosive and everywhere. Green’s Exploration (175/214) handed decks running no Ability Pokémon a powerful three-Trainer search — another build-around born in this set.
Fire everywhere. ReshiZard-Welder was so consistent and so dominant that plenty of players felt it defined — some would say oppressed — competitive play for the better part of a year. The Reshiram & Charizard-GX rainbow rare (217/214) became the era’s must-have chase to match.
Another giant set. At 234 cards counting its secret rares, Unbroken Bonds was yet another marathon for master-set collectors — the second enormous Sun & Moon expansion in a row, and a sign of just how big the sets had grown by 2019.

Variations between the Japanese and English language releases
Unbroken Bonds carried on the TAG TEAM craze and did it at enormous scale. Japan’s version, Double Blaze (SM10), arrived on March 1st, 2019 with 116 cards, and the English set followed on May 3rd, 2019, nearly doubling in size to 234 cards (214 numbered plus 20 secret rares) — one of the biggest expansions of the whole era.
The card everyone chased is Reshiram & Charizard-GX — ‘ReshiZard’ — which headlines in both regions and went on to define a huge chunk of the 2019 competitive season. It’s joined by TAG TEAMs like Muk & Alolan Muk-GX, Marshadow & Machamp-GX and Blastoise & Piplup-GX. As usual, the bigger English count comes from the extra secret rares and full-art alternates stacked on top of the leaner Japanese release.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Reshiram & Charizard-GX — #20/214

“Two Skyla in one.” A Trainer-tutor engine that instantly became a staple in any ability-light deck — consistency in a single card.
Dedenne-GX — #57/214
A Shaymin-EX-style hand refresh (discard your hand, draw six) that slotted into nearly every deck in the format. Pure, splashable consistency.
Trivia & Pop Culture
- One of the biggest SM sets. At 234 cards it was, at release, among the largest single Sun & Moon expansions.
- Melmetal’s TCG arrival. The set brought the Meltan/Melmetal line into the game — a nod to the Pokémon GO and Let’s Go craze — on the Lucario & Melmetal-GX pack art.
- Four pack arts. English packs shipped with four different booster artworks: ReshiZard, Marshadow & Machamp, Gardevoir & Sylveon, and Lucario & Melmetal.
- Staples that outlived the set. Green’s Exploration and Dedenne-GX became format-defining support cards that kept seeing play long after Unbroken Bonds left the shelves.
