Battle Styles booster pack

Sword & Shield—Battle Styles launched on 19 March 2021 as the fifth main expansion of the Sword & Shield era, and it shook up the game with a brand-new mechanic. Many of the set’s cards — every V and VMAX included — are designated either Single Strike or Rapid Strike, two opposing battle styles inspired by the Legendary Pokémon Urshifu.

Single Strike cards hit hard with heavy, all-or-nothing attacks, while Rapid Strike cards rely on speed, spread damage and technical disruption. Each style is backed by its own Trainer cards, Special Energy and Stadiums, encouraging players to build a deck around one style or the other.

The set is headlined by the twin Urshifu VMAX — Single Strike and Rapid Strike — but its most sought-after card is the stunning alternate-art Empoleon V. With 183 cards in total (163 in the main set plus 20 secret rares), Battle Styles delivered chase cards, competitive staples and one of the era’s most beloved illustrations.

Battle Styles consist of Single Strike Style, which delivers powerful, hard-hitting attacks that can Knock Out an opponent in a single blow, and Rapid Strike Style, which uses sneaky, technical attacks that allow a player to attack their opponent when least expected.

Sword & Shield—Battle Styles was released worldwide on 19 March 2021 and, like other Sword & Shield sets, was printed in large quantities across the full range of product types.

English sealed products included four different booster pack artworks (Tyranitar, Empoleon, Single Strike Urshifu and Rapid Strike Urshifu), the 36-pack booster box, two Elite Trainer Boxes — one for Single Strike Urshifu and one for Rapid Strike Urshifu — and the Battle Styles Build & Battle Box. The set was later supported by the two Urshifu VMAX League Battle Decks.

Because it introduced the Single Strike and Rapid Strike mechanic that would run through the rest of 2021, Battle Styles remains a popular set to open, with the alternate-art Empoleon V standing well above the rest of the set on the secondary market.

English version vs. Japanese Variations

Battle Styles is an English compilation of two Japanese sets released simultaneously on 22 January 2021 — Single Strike Master (S5I) and Rapid Strike Master (S5R). Each Japanese set focused on one of the two new battle styles, and the English release merged them into a single 163-card set with an additional run of secret rares.

This split is the set’s defining feature. Single Strike Master notably contains no Water-type Pokémon, while Rapid Strike Master contains no Darkness-type Pokémon — a deliberate design choice reflecting the identity of each style. The English set also adds the extra secret rares (164–183), including the rainbow and gold cards that sit above the standard 163-card numbering.

Here are the Japanese products this expansion is built from — the Single Strike Master (S5I) and Rapid Strike Master (S5R) booster packs and boxes:

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Battle Styles was heavily printed, so most cards are affordable — but a handful of chase cards command real money, led by one of the most admired illustrations of the whole era.

Empoleon V

Empoleon V (alternate art) — #146/163

The undisputed chase card of Battle Styles. This alternate-art Empoleon V — the Emperor Pokémon amid crashing waves — is one of the most beloved illustrations of the entire Sword & Shield era, and by a wide margin the set’s most valuable card.

Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX

Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX — #88/163

One of the set’s two Gigantamax Urshifu, Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX became a competitive powerhouse and a popular pull, with its secret-rare versions carrying real value.

Single Strike Urshifu VMAX

Single Strike Urshifu VMAX — #86/163

The hard-hitting counterpart to its Rapid Strike sibling, Single Strike Urshifu VMAX anchored aggressive Single Strike decks and remains a sought-after chase card.

Tyranitar V

Tyranitar V (alternate art) — #155/163

The alternate-art Single Strike Tyranitar V is another standout, pairing the fearsome pseudo-legendary with dramatic full-art framing that collectors chase.

Bruno

Bruno (full art) — #158/163

The full-art Bruno Supporter is a favourite among trainer-card collectors, and its rainbow secret-rare version is one of the pricier non-Pokémon cards in the set.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Battle Styles reshaped the competitive format, giving both new archetypes a headline attacker plus the Trainer support to power them.

Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX

Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX — #88/163

One of the defining decks of its format — G-Max Rapid Flow could stream damage across the board and snipe key threats, making Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX a top-tier competitive attacker.

Single Strike Urshifu VMAX

Single Strike Urshifu VMAX — #86/163

Single Strike Urshifu VMAX hit for enormous single-target damage with G-Max One Blow, and paired with Single Strike support it became a fast, aggressive knockout machine.

Tapu Koko VMAX

Tapu Koko VMAX — #51/163

A flexible Lightning attacker with strong damage output, Tapu Koko VMAX saw play as both a partner and a standalone threat during the Battle Styles era.

Rapid Strike Style Mustard

Rapid Strike Style Mustard — #132/163

This Supporter let Rapid Strike decks recycle and accelerate resources — a key consistency engine that made the Rapid Strike archetype tick.
