Overview

Pokémon TCG: XY—BREAKpoint arrived on February 3, 2016 as the ninth XY expansion, continuing the BREAK era with 122 cards plus a secret rare (123 total). It’s built from Japan’s 破天の怒り (Rage of the Broken Heavens), released December 11, 2015, and its poster child is a dazzling Shiny Mega Gyarados. But its real legacy belongs to a frog.
BREAKpoint is the home of Greninja BREAK — the centrepiece of one of the most beloved decks in modern Pokémon. It also delivered format staples like Fighting Fury Belt and Puzzle of Time, and four more Pokémon BREAK cards. Two theme decks, Wave Slasher (Water/Grass) and Electric Eye (Lightning/Psychic), rounded out the launch.
Greninja BREAK: Death by a Thousand Cuts
More Pokémon BREAK
BREAKpoint added four more Pokémon BREAK cards to the growing family — each a sideways, all-gold evolution that keeps its Pokémon’s attacks while piling on new power.
Joining it were Luxray BREAK (#47), Golduck BREAK (#18) and Raticate BREAK (#89) — rounding out the set’s gold, sideways showcase.
Mega Evolutions & Pokémon-EX
BREAKpoint is led by a shiny Mega and backed by a deep bench of Pokémon-EX:
Trainers That Shaped the Format
Products & Print Versions
BREAKpoint launched with booster packs in four artworks — Greninja, Gyarados, Luxray and Scizor — plus two theme decks, Wave Slasher and Electric Eye. An Elite Trainer Box, blisters, a collector’s album and portfolios completed the range.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
BREAKpoint lands right in the middle of the BREAK-era chase-card boom, and its secret rares and Full Arts still command real money on the secondary market. One card, though, towers over everything else in the box.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
BREAKpoint did more than look good in a binder — it reshaped the competitive Standard format. Several of its cards became automatic four-ofs in top-tier decks, and a couple stayed relevant for years after the set rotated.
Trivia & Points of Interest
- The name BREAKpoint is a double play on words — the tennis term and a direct nod to the set’s BREAK cards, following BREAKthrough as the second English expansion built around the BREAK Evolution mechanic.
- The shiny M Gyarados-EX at #123 sits one number past the “official” 122-card count, making BREAKpoint one of those sets where the very last card is the hardest to complete.
- Puzzle of Time is regularly cited as one of the most impactful Trainer cards of the XY era; its two-card recursion combo appeared in decks for years and made players think twice about everything they sent to the discard pile.
- Greninja BREAK proved a non-EX attacker could hang with the format’s biggest Mega and EX threats, and it stayed a benchmark deck well beyond its own season.
- Both theme decks — Wave Slasher (Grass/Water, built around Greninja) and Electric Eye (Lightning/Psychic, built around Luxray) — showcased the set’s marquee lines straight out of the box.
Japanese Sets, Videos & Gallery
In Japan, the cards in BREAKpoint came from 破天の怒り (Rage of the Broken Heavens), released on December 11, 2015 — about two months ahead of the English set’s February 3, 2016 launch. As with the rest of the XY-era BREAK block, English BREAKpoint drew its 122-card lineup from this single Japanese expansion, with the secret shiny M Gyarados-EX added on top for Western collectors.
