Every era needs a grand finale, and Cosmic Eclipse is the Sun & Moon TCG going out with the biggest set it had ever made. Released in November 2019, SM12 topped out at 271 cards — the largest English Pokémon expansion produced to that point — and used every one of them to send the era off in style.
The headline is Arceus & Dialga & Palkia-GX — “ADP” — the first-ever three-Pokémon Tag Team. Its Altered Creation-GX attack buffed your damage for the rest of the game (and could steal an extra Prize), and it went on to define competitive Pokémon well into the Sword & Shield era. Few finale cards have ever been this important.
Cosmic Eclipse also debuted TAG TEAM Supporters — pairs of famous human Trainers on a single card, like Cynthia & Caitlin and Red & Green — giving the set a run of gorgeous character-art secret rares that collectors adore. Alongside them sit more classic Tag Teams (Charizard & Braixen, Blastoise & Piplup, Solgaleo & Lunala) and the cuddly triple Togepi & Cleffa & Igglybuff-GX.
Reception was fittingly celebratory. Between its record size, the metagame-defining ADP, and a stacked secret-rare lineup, Cosmic Eclipse is remembered as a genuine grand finale — a huge, generous, collector-and-competitor-pleasing send-off for one of the game’s best-loved eras.
A Supreme Connection of Stars and Pokémon! At the apex of the Sun & Moon Series, the Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon—Cosmic Eclipse expansion boosts the connection of Pokémon and Trainers, and it launches TAG TEAM combinations to new levels! Charizard & Braixen-GX, Venusaur & Snivy-GX, Blastoise & Piplup-GX, and Solgaleo & Lunala-GX, along with the triple TAG TEAM of Arceus & Dialga & Palkia-GX, are ready to take on all comers!
— Official Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon—Cosmic Eclipse expansion description
Set Highlights: The GX Era Signs Off
The grand finale. Cosmic Eclipse was the twelfth and final Sun & Moon expansion — the send-off for both Pokémon-GX and the Tag Team GX cards that had defined three years of the game. It went out big: 236 cards in the main set plus a whopping 35 secret rares made it the largest English expansion the TCG had ever printed.
Three legends on one card. The headline was a genuine first — Arceus & Dialga & Palkia-GX (156/236), the first-ever three-Pokémon Tag Team GX. It had company: Togepi & Cleffa & Igglybuff-GX (143/236) squeezed three baby Pokémon onto a single card. The rainbow “ADP” (258/236) sat right at the top of a very long chase list.
ADP takes over. Arceus & Dialga & Palkia-GX didn’t just look impressive — it cracked the game open. Its Altered Creation GX attack boosted your damage for the rest of the match and, with an extra Water Energy attached, let you take an extra Prize card on knockouts. That single once-per-game move made ADP the backbone of the dominant deck heading into the 2020 season (most famously ADP/Zacian), and it’s remembered as one of the most oppressive cards of its whole era.
A big, divisive send-off. Reception was a real mix. Some players loved the enormous, everything-and-the-kitchen-sink final set and the emotional close to the GX era; others groaned at the record card count (good luck completing the master set) and at ADP bending the competitive game around its extra-Prize trick. Either way, it was a fitting, oversized full stop on the Sun & Moon years.

Print Versions & Collectors Info
Cosmic Eclipse closed out the Sun & Moon era in style, and unlike some of the era’s specials it was a full retail expansion — booster boxes, Elite Trainer Boxes, blisters and premium collections all included. The English release ran to a huge 271 cards (236 numbered plus 35 secret rares).
How it compares to Japan and Korea. Japan’s version was Alter Genesis (SM12, 117 cards), released September 6th, 2019. As with the rest of the era, the English set is far larger, its count swollen by a deep run of secret rares and full-art alternates. Korea released the same expansion as Alter Genesis (얼터제네시스), a Korean-language edition that shares the Japanese pack artwork.
The English set came in four booster artworks — Arceus/Dialga/Palkia, Solgaleo/Lunala, Blastoise/Piplup and Cleffa/Igglybuff/Togepi — shown here alongside the Japanese Alter Genesis pack:
Variations between the Japanese and English language releases
Cosmic Eclipse is the grand finale of the Sun & Moon era — and its biggest set. Japan’s version, Alter Genesis (SM12, 117 cards), arrived on September 6th, 2019, and the English release closed out the era on November 1st, 2019 at a massive 271 cards (236 numbered plus 35 secret rares).
Fittingly for a send-off, it went bigger than ever on TAG TEAM: the headline card is Arceus & Dialga & Palkia-GX, the first TAG TEAM to put three Legendary Pokémon on a single card. As with the rest of the era, the English set’s inflated count comes from a deep run of secret rares and full-art alternates layered on top of the leaner Japanese release.
