Sword and Shield Zacian booster pack

The Sword & Shield Base Set launched the eighth generation of the Pokémon Trading Card Game on 7 February 2020, opening the Sword & Shield era and taking the game to the Galar region for the first time. It was assembled from the two Japanese expansions Sword (S1W) and Shield (S1H) — both released on 6 December 2019 — which were merged and expanded into a single 216-card English set (202 cards in the main set plus 14 secret rares).

This was the set that reinvented the game’s headline mechanic. The GX Pokémon of the Sun & Moon era were retired and replaced by Pokémon V and their evolved Pokémon VMAX — the trading-card echo of the video games’ Dynamax and Gigantamax phenomena. Zacian V and Zamazenta V, the Legendary mascots of Pokémon Sword and Shield, headline the expansion, while Pokémon such as Snorlax and Lapras gain towering VMAX forms. The set also refreshed the card frame, giving Pokémon larger, cleaner full-height art borders.

Sword & Shield also quietly closed a chapter: the Fairy type, introduced in the XY era, was retired here, with former Fairy Pokémon folding back into the Psychic type. Alongside the Galar starters Rillaboom, Cinderace and Inteleon and a deep line-up of new Trainer cards, the Base Set laid down the template that the rest of the Sword & Shield era would build on.

Start a New Journey & Meet New Pokémon V! Welcome to the Galar region! Meet more than a dozen powerful new Pokémon V, including the Legendary Zacian and Zamazenta—and some, like Stonjourner and Snorlax, that can evolve into enormous Pokémon VMAX for even more power!

Sword & Shield launched as a full retail expansion: sealed booster boxes, two Elite Trainer Boxes, three single-Prize theme decks, a Build & Battle box and a range of premium collections. The English release runs to 216 cards — 202 in the main set plus 14 secret rares.

How it compares to Japan and Korea. In Japan the same material was split across two expansions released side by side — Sword (S1W) and Shield (S1H), roughly 60 cards each, both out on 6 December 2019. Korea, which localises the Japanese sets, likewise released Sword (소드) and Shield (실드) as two separate expansions sharing the Japanese pack artwork, rather than the single combined set used in the West. That is why the English expansion is so much larger than any one of its Asian counterparts — its count swollen by secret rares and full-art alternates.

The English set came in four booster artworks — Zacian, Zamazenta, Gigantamax Lapras and Gigantamax Snorlax — shown here alongside the Japanese Sword and Shield packs:

Beyond boosters, the set was sold as a sealed 36-pack booster box, two Elite Trainer Boxes (Zacian and Zamazenta), three single-Prize theme decks built around the Galar starters, and a Build & Battle box:

Variations between the Japanese and English language releases

Japanese — Sword (S1W) pack
Japanese — Sword (S1W) pack
Japanese — Shield (S1H) pack
Japanese — Shield (S1H) pack

The biggest difference is structural. In Japan the launch of the Sword & Shield era was two separate 60-card expansions — Sword (S1W) and Shield (S1H) — each with its own booster artwork, released together on 6 December 2019. The Pokémon Company merged and expanded them into the single 216-card English Sword & Shield expansion on 7 February 2020.

Beyond the split, the cards themselves are near-identical between regions — the same illustrations and layouts, differing only in the language of the name and text and in the set symbol. The English set also adds the extra secret rares that the Japanese sets of this era did not print.

Here are the Japanese products this expansion draws from — the Sword (S1W) and Shield (S1H) booster packs and boxes:

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

As the launch set of a brand-new era, Sword & Shield packs a deep run of secret rares. The chase pulls are the gold and rainbow versions of the Legendary heroes and the era’s most popular Trainer, plus the full-art V cards.

Zacian V (gold secret rare) — #211/202

Zacian V (gold secret rare) — #211/202

The gold-etched Zacian V is the premier chase card of the set — a fully gilded version of the box Legendary, and the most sought-after and most valuable pull for years after release.

Marnie (rainbow secret rare) — #208/202

Marnie (rainbow secret rare) — #208/202

Marnie’s rainbow rare became one of the most iconic Trainer cards of the entire Sword & Shield era. The character’s huge popularity kept this hyper-rare in high demand well beyond the set’s print run.

Zacian V (full art) — #195/202

Zacian V (full art) — #195/202

The ultra-rare full-art Zacian V — paired with a matching full-art Zamazenta V (#196/202) — gives the two Legendary heroes dramatic alternate artwork, and both are prized by collectors.

Marnie (full art) — #200/202

Marnie (full art) — #200/202

Beyond the rainbow version, Marnie’s standard full art is itself a highly prized card, loved for its character illustration and a staple of the era’s collections.

Professor’s Research (full art) — #201/202

Professor’s Research (full art) — #201/202

The full-art Professor’s Research featuring Professor Magnolia is a chase Supporter valued for both play and artwork — a fixture of Sword & Shield decks for years.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Sword & Shield didn’t just start a new era cosmetically — it introduced the Pokémon and, crucially, the Trainer engine that defined competitive decks for years.

Zacian V — #138/202

Zacian V — #138/202

Arguably the most important card in the set. Its Intrepid Sword Ability digs three cards deep for a Metal Energy and attaches it every turn, powering up a 230-damage Brave Blade almost immediately. Zacian V anchored Metal decks and the dominant Arceus & Dialga & Palkia-GX / Zacian archetype, making it one of the most played Pokémon of the whole era.

Quick Ball — #179/202

Quick Ball — #179/202

The Item that made every deck consistent — discard a card to search your deck for any Basic Pokémon and put it into your hand. A four-of staple for the entire era.

Marnie — #169/202

Marnie — #169/202

The premier disruption Supporter: both players shuffle their hands into the bottom of their deck and draw fresh — five for you, four for the opponent — hitting their setup while refilling your own.

Professor’s Research — #178/202

Professor’s Research — #178/202

Draw-7 in a single card. Professor’s Research (Professor Magnolia) discards your hand and draws seven — the raw card advantage that powered the aggressive, low-count decks of the era.

Metal Saucer — #170/202

Metal Saucer — #170/202

Energy acceleration that made Zacian V terrifying — attach a Metal Energy from your discard pile to a Benched Metal Pokémon. Alongside the Air Balloon Tool (#156/202) for free retreat and bulky attackers like Snorlax VMAX (#142) and Cramorant V (#155), it rounded out the toolkit that defined the format.

Trivia & Pop Culture

  • The debut of V and VMAX. Sword & Shield introduced Pokémon V and Pokémon VMAX, the trading-card counterpart to the video games’ Dynamax and Gigantamax. VMAX cards carry oversized artwork and enormous HP totals.
  • The Fairy type retired here. This set marked the end of the Fairy type in the TCG — Fairy Pokémon from the XY and Sun & Moon eras were reclassified as Psychic type from Sword & Shield onward.
  • Goodbye GX. The GX mechanic of the Sun & Moon era did not carry over; V and VMAX took its place as the game’s premium Pokémon.
  • A redesigned card frame. The set debuted a cleaner card layout with larger art windows and an updated energy-type and text arrangement — the template used for the rest of the era.
  • Galar arrives. It was the first TCG expansion set in the Galar region and Generation VIII, launching in the first year of the Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield video games.
  • Two sets become one. The English expansion fused Japan’s simultaneously-released Sword (S1W) and Shield (S1H) sets into a single, much larger 216-card release.
