Lost Origin Giratina VSTAR booster pack

Pokémon TCG: Sword & Shield—Lost Origin is the eleventh main expansion of the Sword & Shield era, released in English on 9 September 2022. Built around the return of the Lost Zone — a one-way region of the play space where cards are banished for the rest of the game — it handed the modern game one of its most distinctive engines and is fronted by the shimmering Giratina VSTAR.

Rather than leaning on a single dominant Pokémon line, Lost Origin is a toolbox set that rewards players for filling the Lost Zone and then cashing it in for powerful, once-per-game payoffs. Alongside Giratina it introduced Aerodactyl VSTAR, Hisuian Goodra VSTAR, Hisuian Zoroark VSTAR, Magnezone VSTAR and Drapion VSTAR, plus three new Radiant Pokémon — Radiant Gardevoir, Radiant Steelix and Radiant Hisuian Sneasler.

The English set totals 217 cards — 196 in the main numbering plus 21 secret rares (197–217) — and carries its own 30-card Trainer Gallery (TG01–TG30) for 247 collectibles in all. The Japanese counterpart, the enhanced expansion Lost Abyss (s11), had arrived earlier on 15 July 2022.

For collectors, Lost Origin is remembered above all for its alternate-art secret rares. The Distortion World illustration of Giratina V (186/196) became one of the defining chase cards of the era, joined by striking alternate arts of Aerodactyl V, Enamorus V and Hisuian Goodra V, plus the set’s own 30-card Trainer Gallery. Released in English on 9 September 2022, it was backed by the usual spread of booster packs, three Elite Trainer Boxes and a Booster Bundle.

Surpass the Point of No Return! As the boundary between dimensions tears apart, Giratina VSTAR plunges the world into the abyssal shadow of the Lost Zone! Be wary of the Lost Zone’s power—unlike the discard pile, cards that are sent here cannot be recovered. While Aerodactyl VSTAR harnesses this distorted power, Magnezone, Drapion, Hisuian Goodra, and Hisuian Zoroark also appear as Pokémon VSTAR to show off their own astonishing skills, joined by Kyurem VMAX. Above the shadows, Enamorus V and Radiant Gardevoir conjure up dazzling magic in the Sword & Shield—Lost Origin expansion!

Set Highlights: The Lost Zone Arrives

Lost Origin’s defining feature is right there in the name. The Lost Zone is a separate area of the play space, kept apart from the discard pile: once a card is sent there, it is gone for the rest of the game. Cards throughout the set reward players for banking cards in the Lost Zone and then spending that investment once a threshold — usually seven, or ten — is reached.

Comfey became the quiet engine of the format, using its Flower Selecting ability to sift the top of the deck and feed the Lost Zone every turn. Support cards like Colress’s Experiment, Mirage Gate and Lost Vacuum all interact with the zone, while payoff attacks — Giratina VSTAR’s Star Requiem, Sableye’s Lost Mine — turn a full Lost Zone into a game-ending threat. The resulting ‘Lost Box’ decks became a pillar of the competitive metagame for the remainder of the Sword & Shield era.

Giratina VSTAR & the Lost Zone Engine

Giratina VSTAR (131/196) is the face of the set and its ultimate Lost Zone payoff. Its Star Requiem VSTAR Power reads simply: if you have 10 or more cards in the Lost Zone, this attack Knocks Out the opposing Pokémon — no damage roll, no Weakness or Resistance, just a clean removal. Paired with Lost Impact, which banks cards to the Lost Zone as it deals 280, Giratina VSTAR gave the archetype a Dragon-type finisher that could close games out of nowhere.

Its supporting Giratina V (130/196) — and especially the haunting alternate-art print at 186/196 — became one of the most coveted cards of the whole era, its Distortion World illustration turning it into a chase card that dwarfed the rest of the set in value.

Radiant Pokémon Continue

The Radiant Pokémon mechanic introduced in Pokémon GO carried straight into Lost Origin with three new shining rares. Radiant Gardevoir (069/196) offered a Psychic support piece, Radiant Steelix (124/196) a bulky Metal wall, and Radiant Hisuian Sneasler (123/196) a Fighting attacker with Lost Zone synergy of its own. As always, a deck may include only a single Radiant Pokémon, keeping these glittering cards a deliberate deckbuilding choice rather than an auto-include.

Lost Origin carried the Trainer Gallery — the third since the subset debuted in Brilliant Stars. Numbered TG01–TG30, it pairs full-art Pokémon shown alongside a Trainer in the artwork with alternate-art Supporter cards. Highlights include a stunning Charizard (TG03), Mew VMAX (TG30), Pikachu V/VMAX (TG16/TG17) and Eternatus VMAX (TG22), plus character cards for Kabu, Nessa and Opal. These sit outside the main 196 numbering and are pulled at the same rate as the set’s other secret rares.

Lost Origin’s English launch was backed by the usual line-up of sealed products — booster packs and a Booster Bundle, three themed Elite Trainer Boxes, Build & Battle Boxes and Build & Battle Stadiums, and a range of later premium collections and tins. Every card in the main set has a standard print, with reverse-holo variants for the Common through Rare Holo cards; the secret rares (197–217) and the Trainer Gallery cards appear only in booster packs at lower pull rates.

English version vs. Japanese Variations

As with every Sword & Shield expansion, the English Lost Origin was assembled from a Japanese source — here the enhanced expansion Lost Abyss (s11), released on 15 July 2022. Lost Abyss was a smaller set, and The Pokémon Company International expanded it for the West, folding in cards from Japanese sub-sets and promotional releases to reach the 196-card main count.

The most visible difference is the Trainer Gallery: this 30-card subset is a Western-market concept and does not appear as a numbered block in Japan, where the equivalent ‘Character Rare’ and ‘Character Super Rare’ cards sit inside the main set instead. Card numbering therefore differs between the two versions.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Lost Origin is a chase-heavy set, and its ceiling is set by a handful of alternate-art secret rares and the returning Trainer Gallery. Approximate near-mint raw prices are given as a guide only — the market moves constantly.

Giratina V - 186/196 (Alternate Art)

Giratina V — 186/196 (Alternate Art)

The set’s crown jewel. Its ethereal Distortion World illustration made the #186 alternate-art Giratina V one of the most valuable cards of the entire Sword & Shield era, commanding three-figure prices raw and far more graded.

Aerodactyl V - 180/196 (Alternate Art)

Aerodactyl V — 180/196 (Alternate Art)

A fan-favourite alternate art of Aerodactyl soaring over a canyon, and one of the most popular pulls in the set behind Giratina.

Giratina VSTAR - 212/196 (Gold Secret)

Giratina VSTAR — 212/196 (Gold Secret)

The gold-etched secret-rare version of the set’s headline VSTAR, and the top-end chase for players completing the numbered run.

Radiant Gardevoir - 069/196 (Radiant Rare)

Radiant Gardevoir — 069/196 (Radiant Rare)

One of only three shining Radiant Pokémon in the set, and the most sought-after of the trio.

Charizard - TG03 (Trainer Gallery)

Charizard — TG03 (Trainer Gallery)

A gorgeous Trainer Gallery Charizard — as ever, Charizard artwork carries a premium on the secondary market.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

On the competitive table, Lost Origin reshaped the Standard format — the Lost Zone engine it introduced powered the dominant ‘Lost Box’ decks for the better part of two seasons.

Giratina VSTAR - 131/196

Giratina VSTAR — 131/196

The engine and the finisher. Lost Impact loads the Lost Zone while dealing 280, and once ten cards are banked, Star Requiem simply Knocks Out the opposing Pokémon. It defined a top-tier archetype for the rest of the format.

Aerodactyl VSTAR - 093/196

Aerodactyl VSTAR — 093/196

Its Primal Wingbeat scales with the Lost Zone and its Ancient Star VSTAR Power shuts off opposing Special Energy — a flexible attacker that anchored decks of its own.

Comfey - 079/196

Comfey — 079/196

Unremarkable on paper, indispensable in practice. Flower Selecting fed the Lost Zone every single turn, making this humble Common the beating heart of Lost Box decks.

Sableye - 070/196

Sableye — 070/196

Lost Mine spreads 12 damage counters however you like once the Lost Zone hits ten — a sniping finisher that punished wide boards.

Trivia

  • Lost Origin brought the Lost Zone back to the TCG for the first time in over a decade — the mechanic had last appeared in the Black & White era.
  • Giratina VSTAR’s Star Requiem is one of very few attacks in the game that scores an automatic Knock Out regardless of the defending Pokémon’s remaining HP.
  • The Japanese source set is titled Lost Abyss; the English name reframes the theme around the origin of Giratina’s Distortion World.
  • Comfey (079/196) is widely regarded as one of the most important Common cards ever printed, thanks to its role powering Lost Zone decks.
  • It was the third expansion to include a Trainer Gallery subset, following Brilliant Stars and Astral Radiance.
