Obsidian Flames Charizard ex booster pack

Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet—Obsidian Flames is the third main expansion of the Scarlet & Violet era, released in English on 11 August 2023. Built around a darkness-cloaked Charizard ex, it pushed the Tera Pokémon gimmick to the forefront — Pokémon ex whose Terastal forms swap their usual type — and delivered one of the most chased cards of the entire era.

Where Paldea Evolved built the era’s first decks, Obsidian Flames handed the format its defining engine. Charizard ex paired with Pidgeot ex to power a consistent, hard-hitting deck that anchored competitive play for well over a year, while Tera Pokémon like Tyranitar ex (now Lightning) and Eiscue ex (now Fire) rewrote the type chart mid-battle.

For collectors, Obsidian Flames is remembered above all for its Special Illustration Rares — and specifically for the Charizard ex “moonlit” art, which became one of the single most sought-after cards of the Scarlet & Violet era, sitting alongside a full run of gold Hyper Rares.

Raging Flames Forged in Darkness! Red-hot embers illuminate the pitch-black night and sparks flare into an inferno as Charizard ex surges forth with newfound powers of darkness! The glittering Terastal phenomenon imbues some Pokémon ex like Tyranitar, Eiscue, and Vespiquen with different types than usual, while Dragonite ex and Greedent ex show mastery of their own inner strengths. Not to be outdone, Revavroom ex, Melmetal ex, and more Pokémon promise to change the course of battle in the Scarlet & Violet—Obsidian Flames expansion!

Set Highlights: Charizard Lights the Format

Obsidian Flames is where the Scarlet & Violet era found its first great deck. It carried the Pokémon ex and Tera Pokémon mechanics forward from Paldea Evolved and delivered the cards that would define competitive play for a year — while giving collectors one of the era’s deepest secret-rare runs.

The set’s hook was the Tera Pokémon ex. Their glittering Terastal forms arrive as a different type than usual — Tyranitar ex attacks as Lightning, Eiscue ex as Fire and Vespiquen ex as Psychic — and while they sit on the Bench they take no damage at all, a defensive quirk that shaped deckbuilding across the whole era.

Charizard ex was the headliner. Its Infernal Reign ability loads three Basic Fire Energy from the deck the instant it evolves, and Burning Darkness hits harder the more Prize cards the opponent has already taken — a comeback engine that, paired with Pidgeot ex’s Quick Search, became the most reliable deck in the game.

Obsidian Flames launched with the full Scarlet & Violet retail line-up. Booster packs held 10 cards and came in four wrappers — Charizard, Tyranitar, Dragonite and Revavroom — sold in booster boxes of 36. An Elite Trainer Box fronted by Charizard ex, Build & Battle Boxes and Stadiums, and later premium collections rounded out the range.

English version vs. Japanese Variations

The English Obsidian Flames is built on the single Japanese set Ruler of the Black Flame (sv3), released on 28 July 2023 and fronted by the same darkness-clad Charizard ex. The English release expands it — folding in extra Trainers and a deeper run of secret rares — to reach a 197-card main set (230 with secret rares).

As always, the Japanese boosters hold fewer cards per pack, so collectors after the original printings chase the Ruler of the Black Flame pack and sealed box.

Pidgeot ex — 217/197 (Special Illustration Rare)

The set’s other blue-chip Special Illustration Rare. As one half of the format-defining Charizard/Pidgeot deck, its sweeping full-scene artwork made it a must-have for competitive collectors.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Charizard ex — 125/197

Charizard ex — 125/197

The single most important card of the era. Infernal Reign accelerates three Basic Fire Energy on evolution and Burning Darkness scales with the opponent’s Prize count, making Charizard ex a relentless one-card comeback engine that defined a full year of the format.

Pidgeot ex — 164/197

Pidgeot ex — 164/197

Quick Search — once per turn, grab any card from your deck — turned Pidgeot ex into the ultimate consistency engine. It became a near-universal partner and the backbone of the Charizard/Pidgeot archetype.

Kingambit — 150/197

Kingambit — 150/197

A one-Prize powerhouse whose attack climbs with the number of your Pokémon in play. Cheap to run and brutal in the late game, Kingambit gave budget and control decks a genuine finisher.

Trivia

Obsidian Flames leaned into Tera Pokémon ex harder than any set before it, and its Japanese counterpart, Ruler of the Black Flame, shares Charizard ex as its cover — the first time Charizard received the ex treatment in the Scarlet & Violet era.

The Charizard ex Special Illustration Rare (223/197) went on to become one of the most valuable and widely chased single cards of the generation, helping sealed Obsidian Flames product hold its value long after release. The set also introduced the regional Paldean forms of Wooper and Clodsire to the English game.
