Scarlet & Violet Miraidon booster pack

Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet is the base set of the ninth era of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, released in English on 31 March 2023. It is one of the most significant sets in the game’s history — a complete reboot that retired the Sword & Shield era’s V, VMAX and VSTAR cards, redesigned every card frame from the ground up, and reset the Standard format around a brand-new mechanic: the return of Pokémon ex.

The set is built around the two Paldea box legendaries, Miraidon ex and Koraidon ex, and its 198-card main set is a from-scratch foundation of Pokémon, Trainers and Energy for the new format. Beneath the numbered set sit 60 secret rares — full-art ex Pokémon, full-art Supporters, the striking new Special Illustration Rare tier, and gold Hyper Rare cards — bringing the total to 258.

Scarlet & Violet also gave the whole game a fresh coat of paint: silver-bordered cards, a redesigned Energy symbol set, a smaller yardline HP font, and a cleaner layout that would define the era. For collectors, its Special Illustration Rares — particularly Gardevoir ex and the two box legends — became instant grails; for players, it re-founded the competitive game.

Begin a New Adventure with Pokémon ex! Set out for a journey in the Paldea region! Meet first partners Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly, and explore the power of the Legendary Pokémon Koraidon and Miraidon as Pokémon ex. Other Pokémon ex evolve their way into battle—including Arcanine and Gyarados with a dazzling new look. Even more Pokémon appear as illustration rare cards with amazing artwork—discover them all in the Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet expansion!

Set Highlights: A New Era Begins

Scarlet & Violet is a foundational reboot, so its story is less about one chase card and more about sweeping change. The headline is the return of Pokémon ex — powerful, hard-hitting Pokémon that give up two Prize cards when Knocked Out, replacing the Sword & Shield era’s V / VMAX / VSTAR line. The set also debuts Tera Pokémon, crystalline ex cards that can’t be damaged while on the Bench, and rolls out a complete visual redesign of every card in the game.

Miraidon ex & Koraidon ex

The two faces of the set are the Paldea box legendaries. Miraidon ex (81/198) became one of the defining competitive cards of the entire era — its Tandem Unit Ability lets you fill your Bench with Basic Lightning Pokémon the moment it comes into play, powering explosive turn-one boards. Koraidon ex (125/198) answered on the Fighting side with aggressive, cost-efficient attacks. Both received full-art Ultra Rares, Special Illustration Rares and gold Hyper Rares among the secret rares.

Pokémon ex, Tera & the New Rarities

Alongside the mechanic reset came a new rarity ladder. Ordinary ex cards sit at Double Rare (the black double-diamond), full-arts at Ultra Rare, and the new premium Illustration Rare and Special Illustration Rare tiers deliver the set’s most sought-after art. Capping the set are six gold Hyper Rares. Gardevoir ex, Great Tusk ex and the full-art Supporters like Arven and Penny are among the standouts.

Scarlet & Violet launched with the full new-era retail line-up. Booster packs held 10 cards and came in four wrappers — Gyarados, Koraidon, Miraidon and a Partners art — sold in booster boxes of 36. The set was also backed by two Elite Trainer Boxes (Koraidon and Miraidon), Build & Battle Boxes, Build & Battle Stadiums, and a range of later premium collections and tins.

English version vs. Japanese Variations

As with every era opener, the English Scarlet & Violet is not a copy of a single Japanese release. It combines two smaller Japanese sets that launched together on 20 January 2023Scarlet ex (sv1S) and Violet ex (sv1V) — each with its own box legendary on the front. The English set merges both, adds cards from Japanese promos, and renumbers everything into one 198-card run.

Japanese boosters carry fewer cards per pack than their English counterparts, and the two Japanese sets were sold as separate products, making them a popular choice for collectors chasing the same artwork in its original printing.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Scarlet & Violet is a chase-heavy set built on its new Special Illustration Rare and Hyper Rare tiers. Approximate near-mint raw prices are a guide only — the market moves constantly.

Gardevoir ex — 245/198 (Special Illustration Rare)

Gardevoir ex — 245/198 (Special Illustration Rare)

The set’s crown jewel. Its serene, storybook Special Illustration Rare made Gardevoir ex one of the most beloved and valuable cards of the whole Scarlet & Violet era, and the card most people cracked base-set packs hoping to pull.

Miraidon ex — 244/198 (Special Illustration Rare)

Miraidon ex — 244/198 (Special Illustration Rare)

The future box legend rendered in a sweeping cityscape SIR — a top chase both for collectors and for players who wanted their format-defining deck in style.

Koraidon ex — 247/198 (Special Illustration Rare)

Koraidon ex — 247/198 (Special Illustration Rare)

The ancient counterpart, charging across a prehistoric Paldea vista. One of the set’s marquee Special Illustration Rares.

Arven — 249/198 (Special Illustration Rare)

Arven — 249/198 (Special Illustration Rare)

The full-art Supporter everyone actually played, given a warm SIR of Arven and his Mabosstiff. A perennial favourite among trainer-card collectors.

Miraidon ex — 253/198 (Hyper Rare)

Miraidon ex — 253/198 (Hyper Rare)

The gold, etched Hyper Rare of the set’s signature card — the top-end chase for players completing the numbered run.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

As a format-resetting base set, Scarlet & Violet defined the opening Standard metagame — several of its cards anchored top decks for the better part of a season.

Miraidon ex — 81/198

Miraidon ex — 81/198

Arguably the most important competitive card of the set. Its Tandem Unit Ability searches out Basic Lightning Pokémon to the Bench for free, and Photon Blaster hits for big damage — the engine of the dominant Miraidon ex deck that opened the era.

Gardevoir ex — 86/198

Gardevoir ex — 86/198

The heart of one of the format’s best decks. Its Psychic Embrace Ability loads Psychic Energy from the discard onto your attackers, enabling a flexible, resilient toolbox archetype that stayed strong for years.

Arven — 166/198

Arven — 166/198

A best-in-class Supporter that searches out both an Item and a Tool in one card — instant consistency glue that saw play in a huge range of decks across the era.

Great Tusk ex — 123/198

Great Tusk ex — 123/198

A hard-hitting Fighting ex whose Gigaton Stomp deals reliable, un-reduceable damage — a staple attacker and a strong answer to the format’s Lightning decks.

Trivia

  • Scarlet & Violet retired the V, VMAX and VSTAR mechanics and brought back Pokémon ex for the first time since the EX era — now written in lowercase to distinguish it from the 2000s uppercase “EX”.
  • Every card in the game was redesigned: new silver borders, a new Energy-symbol set, and a smaller HP/attack font were introduced with this set.
  • It debuted the Special Illustration Rare and Illustration Rare tiers, which quickly became the era’s most collected rarities.
  • The English set combines the two Japanese sets Scarlet ex and Violet ex, which released simultaneously on 20 January 2023.
  • Miraidon ex went on to become one of the defining competitive cards of the entire Scarlet & Violet era straight out of the base set.
