Casting a Paul on Barry! is the 27th episode of Pokémon DP: Sinnoh League Victors, the thirteenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 646th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 651, Bulbapedia code DP184). It first aired in Japan on 15 July 2010 and in the United States on 4 December 2010. It falls within the season’s The Lily of the Valley Conference stretch (EP182–EP185).
Synopsis
Paul defeats Barry three to nothing in the Sinnoh League’s third round. Ash wins his second-round match when Snorlax’s Body Slam defeats a Grumpig, and the draw sets Ash against Conway and Barry against Paul. Barry ignores Dawn’s warning about Paul’s coldness, and Conway reveals he has been studying Tobias, who has won using only Darkrai.
On a rocky field, Barry’s Skarmory sets Spikes but falls to Magmortar’s Flamethrower, and Empoleon’s Hydro Cannon hurts Magmortar before Paul switches to Ursaring. Barry’s Hitmonlee burns Ursaring with Blaze Kick, only to activate its Guts and be crushed by Hammer Arm.
Empoleon turns Ursaring’s Focus Blast back on it with Steel Wing, but Paul’s newly evolved Electivire shrugs off Spikes, counters Hyper Beam with Thunder and wears Empoleon down with Giga Impact and Thunder Punch. Even Torrent’s boosted Hydro Cannon is stopped by Protect, and Thunder ends the match. Barry accepts the loss and promises to cheer for Ash, and Conway warns of his secret strategy.
