A Maractus Musical! is the 5th episode of Pokémon: BW Rival Destinies, the fifteenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 706th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 711, Bulbapedia code BW053). It first aired in Japan on 27 October 2011 and in the United States on 17 March 2012. It falls within the season’s The road to Driftveil stretch (EP53–EP58).
Synopsis
Ash, Iris and Cilan help a performer named Toby and his three Maractus perfect their rainbow routine, and Ash fights his first official Triple Battle. Toby’s finale, “Over the Rainbow”, needs the smallest Maractus, Tussy, to land on the arms of Marra and Racca and use Sunny Day, but Tussy keeps falling. Rhythm sessions with the group’s Pokémon and jumping lessons from Iris’s Emolga help only a little.
A Triple Battle between the Maractus and Ash’s Pikachu, Tepig and Snivy is called off when Tussy panics on its partners’ arms, revealing a fear of heights. Toby explains that he dreams of reviving his deserted desert hometown, but when he scolds Tussy for failing again, it runs away just before the local Pokémon Performance Competition.
Searching with Ash, Toby shields Tussy from a Scolipede. Tussy leaps onto the bug’s head, jumps clear as Pikachu’s Electro Ball strikes the ground, and lands on its partners’ arms for the first time. Toby apologises, Iris stalls the show until they return, and the trio’s flawless routine creates a rainbow and wins the competition, sending Toby off to audition for the Musical in Nimbasa City.
