Synopsis
Determined to fill his Pokédex on the road to Mew, Goh goes on a catching spree in Vermilion Forest and ends the day with all twelve Bug-type Pokémon native to Kanto. Well stocked with Poké Balls, he starts badly: his throw at a nesting Pidgey bounces off a branch and earns everyone a Gust, a Pidgeotto flies off before he can act, and a Dugtrio carries him away and dives underground just as he is about to throw. Scorbunny’s twitching ears then lead him to a feeding Caterpie, which he catches by sneaking up slowly, and he decides to complete the whole Caterpie line. A kick at a tree trunk dislodges a Metapod, which he catches at once, and he quickly adds Venomoth, Paras and Parasect. A Butterfree perches too high for him, so Ash lifts him up; Goh fumbles the throw, but Scorbunny kicks the ball into the Butterfree and seals the catch.
Meanwhile an aggressive Pinsir traps Ash and Pikachu in Rock Tomb, then charges at Goh, who flings everything he is carrying at it—including a Poké Ball that accidentally catches it. A Scyther swats his next ball aside and blasts him and Scorbunny away with Air Slash, so Goh turns to the Weedle line instead, catching a Weedle with one throw and a Kakuna from a cluster on the branches. Collecting the Kakuna stirs up a swarm of Beedrill, which chase the boys until Pikachu’s Electroweb snares all but one; Goh judges the escapee the strongest and catches it. Only two Kanto Bug types remain, Scyther and the nocturnal Venonat, and Goh finds a Venonat in a tree hollow. When it resists the ball, Scorbunny battles it and is poisoned by Poison Powder before a Double Kick lets Goh complete the catch.
Nurse Joy and her Chansey cure Scorbunny at the nearest Pokémon Center, and Goh apologises for letting it get hurt, but his partner is as keen as ever to help. Back in the forest, Scorbunny finds the Scyther, which slaps away another ball. With only one ball left, Goh decides to battle: Scyther dodges Quick Attack and Double Kick and knocks Scorbunny down with Slash, but a second Quick Attack connects, and Goh’s last throw catches it. Overjoyed at completing Kanto’s twelve Bug types, Goh and Scorbunny share a high-five. The next morning Chloe and Professor Cerise find the boys’ bedroom crawling with Bug Pokémon, and Cerise happily shows them Cerise Park, a greenhouse habitat built to house the lab’s Pokémon. Asked why he did not try for Mew first, Goh explains that catching every Pokémon will bring him closer to it, while Ash says his own dream is to become a Pokémon Master—something more than being the world’s strongest Trainer—and the two boys encourage each other.
