Synopsis
As guides in Professor Cerise’s Pokémon Orienteering event for children, Ash wins a World Coronation Series match against Oliver while Goh goes on another catching spree, ending with a Farfetch’d that has twice batted his Poké Balls back at him. Chloe has to drag the oversleeping boys out of bed for the event, which challenges groups of children—including Chloe’s brother Parker—to spot as many Pokémon as possible on the way to Vermilion Harbor, with Ash, Goh and Cerise as guides. Ash’s group watches a Persian and three Meowth surround a flock of sleeping Rattata until a Raticate starts a brawl, which Officer Jenny’s Growlithe ends with Roar; Jenny scolds Ash for getting too close to wild Pokémon and leaving young children behind. Team Rocket overhear the event’s plans and hatch a scheme to steal a great many Pokémon at once.
Goh’s group of Chloe, Parker and a young girl walks through a park, where Goh admits he misses his childhood days at Professor Oak’s camp and Chloe teases that he still acts like a child. He catches a Pidgey, a Nidoran♀ and Nidoran♂ together, an Oddish and a Poliwag, while Chloe urges him to teach the children something, but a passing Farfetch’d swats his ball straight back into his face with its leek. At a lookout, Ash’s Rotom Phone receives a challenge from Oliver of Goldenrod City, and with his group eager to watch, the Drone Rotom referees a Normal Class match. Oliver’s Meganium fires Razor Leaf, which Electroweb blocks, but Pikachu’s Thunderbolt does little to the Grass type; Ash then sends Pikachu straight through Meganium’s Solar Beam with Quick Attack and finishes with an Iron Tail to the throat. Ash rises from 3,763rd to 1,512th, and he tells the children that battling is about the bond with your Pokémon, not about looking cool.
Goh adds a Grimer and an Ekans, bringing his Rotom Phone tally to 37 species, but the Farfetch’d knocks back his fastball too. At the harbour two cloaked figures point out an approaching “Lugia” and propose a Raid Battle, only to drop a cage on Pikachu, Raboot and Chloe’s Yamper and float away in a Lugia-shaped balloon. An Aeroblast bursts the balloon, a real Lugia lowers the cage safely, and Pikachu frees everyone with Iron Tail. The Rocket Prize Master gives Jessie and James a Skarmory and a Crobat, whose Air Cutter and Air Slash rain down from out of reach until Raboot kicks a flaming Ember stone that Pikachu redirects with Iron Tail to blast Team Rocket off. Professor Cerise’s own team wins the event, and he tells the children never to give up on their dreams. When the Farfetch’d returns, Goh waits for it to swing its leek, delays his throw and finally catches it—while the “Lugia” flies off and reveals itself as a transformed Mew.
