Synopsis
In Pallet Town, Professor Oak recommends Goh for Project Mew, a research team searching for the Mythical Pokémon, and Goh turns it down until Ash’s old rival Gary outclasses him during a battle with a wild Moltres. Visiting Professor Oak’s Laboratory, Goh recalls coming here at six for a Pokémon Camp delayed by a latecomer, whom Oak and Ash realise was Ash. It was at that camp that Goh first saw Mew. Impressed by Goh’s catches, especially Suicune, Oak tells him about Project Mew, but Goh declines because he does not like working in a team. Ash joyfully reunites with Bulbasaur, Charizard and the rest of his Pokémon, but learns that Infernape has been missing for days after clashing with his other Fire types, and the boys set out to find it. Goh fails to catch a Pidgeotto, whose Gust blows them into an Onix that also escapes his Poké Ball, until a Blastoise’s Hydro Pump knocks it away: its Trainer is Gary Oak.
Gary, now researching around the world, tells Goh he must be at least as strong as Gary to be worthy of Ash’s partnership and explains that he has come to Kanto to find Moltres in a nearby valley. Guessing that Infernape has sensed the Legendary Fire type, the three head there. Gary points out signs of Moltres’s arrival, early-blooming flowers and a valley shaped by magma, and soon they hear Infernape calling from a tree; it greets Ash and Pikachu happily just as Moltres answers. Infernape’s Flamethrower is absorbed, it escapes Fire Spin with Dig, and its Mach Punch and Flare Blitz fall short against Air Slash. Gary’s Blastoise joins in, breaking out of Fire Spin with Rapid Spin and landing Hydro Pump and Water Pulse, but Moltres unleashes Burn Up, which Gary explains costs it its Fire typing, then knocks Blastoise out with Hurricane.
When Moltres’s Air Slash targets Goh’s Cinderace after it misses with Pyro Ball, Pikachu’s Thunderbolt and Gary’s Electivire’s Thunder strike the Legendary bird, which flies away, leaving the burning feather Gary came for. Goh realises he forgot to record the battle. Gary seals the feather in a jar and sends it off with a courier Corviknight. Back at the lab, Gary talks on his Rotom Phone with Danika, and Oak reveals that Gary is a member of Project Mew and the feather was his Trial Mission; once it is verified, a token appears on his phone. Gary tells Goh that he was right not to join at his current level, and says he will keep researching Mew, however impossible it seems. As he leaves, Goh declares that he will join Project Mew after all. Oak suspects that Gary’s taunts were meant to push him to that decision, and Goh vows to train hard so that he is never outmatched like that again.
