Synopsis
Dawn and Chloe nurse the injured Cresselia, Ash reunites with Dawn, and together with Darkrai they protect the Legendary Pokémon from Matori and her Team Rocket squad. Dawn recognises Cresselia from her visit to Fullmoon Island, wins its trust and treats its wounds with herbs she learned about from Brock, mentioning a Pokémon-obsessed friend that reminds Chloe of someone she knows; elsewhere, Ash sneezes. That night Dawn reveals that Johanna is her mother, and Chloe explains that she dislikes people assuming she will become a professor like her father, and that Eevee taught her not to rush. Dawn tells her that her Piplup chose not to evolve, and that sudden clarity after long thought is how great dreams are born. She suggests that Chloe try a Contest and demonstrates with Piplup’s Whirlpool appeal; Eevee copies it eagerly and soaks Chloe. Resting against Cresselia, the girls share a dream of Darkrai, lonely, spreading nightmares through a town until Cresselia’s Lunar Wing dispels them.
Ash and Goh find a Bonsly suffering a nightmare and chase Darkrai towards the girls, while Team Rocket call down the Rocket Prize Master and battle Darkrai with a Dusknoir and a Lunatone. Sensing that Cresselia does not want them to fight Darkrai, Dawn and Chloe flee with it to the seashore, where they run into Ash and Goh. Everyone is surprised to find they know one another, and Chloe guesses that Dawn’s Pokémon-mad friend is Ash. The boys suspect Darkrai attacked Cresselia, but the girls believe Darkrai came only because it thought they had hurt her. Darkrai defeats the trio, who do not even blast off, and then the Matori Matrix airship descends: Matori and her Grunts are the ones who injured Cresselia. With Darkrai’s help the Grunts’ Skuntank, Toxicroak, Purugly and Rhyperior are defeated, but the airship’s full-power electroshockers badly hurt Darkrai as it shields Cresselia, and the friends are caught in a net.
Before the Grunts can seize Darkrai, Cresselia uses Lunar Dance, fully healing it at the cost of all its own energy. Restored, Darkrai drives off the airship with Dark Pulse and puts Matori’s squad and the trio to sleep with Dark Void. It then clears the clouds with another Dark Pulse so that the exhausted Cresselia can heal itself with Moonlight, and the two fly home to their islands. Chloe reasons that Darkrai causes nightmares without meaning to and is feared for it, so Cresselia lives near it on Fullmoon Island so that neither is lonely, and Goh is impressed by her understanding of Pokémon feelings. The next day Professor Cerise calls Chloe to say the Egg has hatched, and that there were more: a crowd of lively Piplup now runs around the laboratory. Chloe reminds the others that they must leave for the Contest, but Eevee is having too much fun in the shallows, and Dawn pulls Chloe into the water to play.
