Synopsis
Ash and Goh win a Pokémon-catching race in Alola, where Goh learns that Ash is the Alola League Champion and catches an Alolan Geodude, a Bruxish and a Passimian, and Team Rocket reunite with their old Alolan Pokémon. Goh invites Ash to partner him in the Pokémon Catch Adventure Race on an uninhabited Alolan island. As soon as they sign up, two boys ask Ash for photos as the Alola League Champion, a title Ash admits he simply forgot to mention, and introduce themselves as Phil and Mayshure, the All-Out Brothers, vowing to beat him. Anna explains the rules: three checkpoints, each requiring a specific Pokémon to be caught, up to three Pokémon per Trainer, no flying, and a trophy and a year’s supply of malasadas for the winners. Riding Goh’s Boldore up a loose rocky slope, the boys reach the first checkpoint, where Grookey spots the target, an Alolan Geodude, and Goh catches it. Team Rocket lurk nearby, planning to steal Alolan Pokémon during the race.
The brothers’ Kommo-o tries to smash a boulder blocking the path with the Z-Move Clangorous Soulblaze, but the attack is so weak that it sends the boulder rolling back at them, until Goh’s Boldore knocks it away with Headbutt, nearly flattening Team Rocket. Ash tells Goh that he can use Z-Moves too but left his Z-Ring behind. At a lake, the second target is a Bruxish: Lucario senses one with its Aura, it counters Pikachu’s Electroweb with Aqua Tail, and Goh’s Pyukumuku badly poisons it with Toxic so that Goh can catch it. The brothers’ Z-Move misses their own Bruxish, and Ash explains that owning a Z-Ring is not enough; their hearts are not in sync with Kommo-o. Team Rocket, meanwhile, realise they are waiting at the wrong lake. In the forest, the final target is Passimian, and Ash lures two out with a game of catch using one of Pikachu’s Berries.
Team Rocket net Pikachu, Grookey and the Passimian, and the Rocket Prize Master’s Vileplume puts most of them to sleep with Sleep Powder, though Grookey is immune as a Grass type and has to be distracted with fruit by Tropius. The All-Out Brothers insist on handling the thieves, and this time Kommo-o’s Clangorous Soulblaze works properly, blasting Team Rocket away and recovering the stolen Pokémon. In the final dash, Goh and Mayshure cross the line together, but Ash beats Phil by a whisker, so Ash and Goh win the trophy, while the brothers receive the malasadas for their bravery. Team Rocket crash into a hot spring where they are reunited with Jessie’s Mimikyu and James’s Mareanie, and Bewear welcomes them with a crushing hug as Stufful looks on. The brothers thank Ash and promise to battle him one day. Then Ash’s Rotom Phone announces his first Ultra Class match: in one week he will face Volkner, the Sinnoh Gym Leader ranked 27th.
