Synopsis
The Masters Eight final between Ash and Leon begins at a packed Wyndon Stadium, where Leon insists that Ash use Mega Evolution, Z-Moves and Dynamax alike, and the opening exchanges leave each Champion a Pokémon down. Answering Project Mew’s urgent summons, Goh arrives in Slateport City and reunites with his fellow Chasers Horace and Gary at the project’s mobile laboratory with Professor Amaranth, Danika and Quillon, insisting that he is fine because he and Ash have promised to smile when they meet again. In Wyndon, Ash’s pep talk to his team is interrupted by Dawn and Chloe, who have come to cheer him on in person, while Leon remembers his very first battle, against Sonia. Piplup wears the cheerleading outfit from Ash’s Sinnoh journey and Chloe’s Eevee waves a pom-pom, and as the finalists walk out, the cheers for Ash grow so loud that even the broadcast crew joins in, while Hop and Sonia cheer for Leon.
Dan announces a six-on-six Full Battle, but Leon asks to face Ash at full power with all three of his special abilities, and with the crowd’s approval and the World Coronation Series management’s consent, Ash agrees. Pikachu leads against Leon’s Cinderace, whose super-effective Scorching Sands beats Thunderbolt to the punch; Pikachu’s attack lands but does nothing, because Cinderace’s Libero Ability has turned it into a Ground type, so both Trainers recall their Pokémon. Leon’s Inteleon, which makes Ash feel as if he is facing Goh’s partners, outdraws Gengar’s Shadow Ball with Snipe Shot and forces it into its shadow with Dark Pulse, then spins while using Aqua Jet: Leon has copied Ash’s Counter Shield. Gengar breaks free with Will-O-Wisp, turning the water into a blinding mist, and Ash Gigantamaxes Gengar as it clears.
G-Max Terror and a double Snipe Shot both land, and G-Max Terror stops Inteleon from switching out. Inteleon tries to dodge Max Ooze and scores a critical hit with Dark Pulse inside Gengar’s mouth, shrinking it back to normal size, but it is struck by the Max Move and knocked out, giving Ash the first knockout of the final as his Pokémon at Professor Oak’s lab celebrate. Leon promises to build on Inteleon’s work and sends out his third Pokémon, Mr. Rime. Its Freeze-Dry shatters Gengar’s Sludge Bombs, freezes the field and coats Gengar in frost; when a second Freeze-Dry fails, Ash smirks, since Gengar’s Cursed Body has disabled the move. But Gengar is still frozen, and Mr. Rime sets up Psychic Terrain and knocks it out with a boosted Expanding Force. Dedicating the knockout to Inteleon, Leon reminds Ash that a Full Battle is won by building up damage as a team.
