Synopsis

While Ash battles Leon, Goh and the Project Mew Chasers explore Faraway Island in search of Mew, braving a dead zone for electronics, a split party and the sudden appearance of Groudon and Kyogre. Aboard the project’s flying research station, Danika explains to the junior Chasers that storms almost always surround the island, leaving only a brief window between seasons, and that the winds force them to land on the shore and walk to Table Mountain. Professor Amaranth recalls that strong Psychic energy detected near the mountain’s centre a year ago started the whole project. In the jungle, Goh switches on a sensor of his own design, upgraded by Amaranth, that compares Psychic energy with Mewtwo’s, which shares Mew’s wavelength. When Gary asks whether they would try to catch Mew, Quillon stays silent; Goh admits he would probably want to, while Horace suggests that Pokémon may choose their Trainers too, and Gary laughs at Goh’s idea that Mew appeared to him because it wanted him to catch it.

Crossing a river on a bridge of roots, the Chasers are attacked by a Swampert, which Horace’s Virizion drives off with Magical Leaf; Horace explains that he caught the Legendary during his last Trial Mission. At the foot of Table Mountain, which has kept its shape for hundreds of millions of years and which Quillon calls the centre of the world, the sensor detects Psychic energy, but then every device stops working, including Rotom Phones and even Poké Balls, which they suspect is Mew’s doing. Quillon insists on pressing on, and the group climbs on ropes until a Skarmory snaps the line below Gary. Quillon and Gary continue to the summit, where they find an unnaturally round hole and climb down on vines, while Danika, Horace and Goh, who misses relying on his Pokémon, follow a ledge to a cave behind a waterfall.

Inside, Danika finds a half-eaten Cheri Berry bearing a fine hair that may belong to Mew and keeps it for DNA analysis, warning that Amaranth’s reports describe Mew as merciful or cruel depending on the encounter; unknown to the trio, Mew is quietly following them. Quillon and Gary reach a lush cave full of Pokémon, including Fossil Pokémon, where Quillon’s Weavile defeats an attacking Kabutops and Aerodactyl. Danika’s group meets a Solrock and a Lunatone, and when Grookey tries to fight them alone, Azumarill’s Hydro Pump saves it and the smoke lets the group escape. Then the danger escalates: a Groudon drops down in front of Quillon and Gary, and as Danika’s group works its way around an underground lake, a Kyogre rises before them.
