Synopsis
Ash, Misty and Brock follow Latias to rescue Latios from a Pokémon hunter who turns Pokémon to stone, and Ash wins the wary Latios’s cooperation in battle before the Eon pair fly home to Alto Mare. As Brock rides Steelix after Latias, she shows Ash telepathically how she has followed him since their first meeting, including the time she caught him in a fall, and then shares a vision of Latios fleeing a hunter riding a Hydreigon until an energy beam strikes him. When she cannot reach Latios, Latias panics, and Ash reassures her as they make camp for the night. The friends realise that the hunter must have caused the wounds Ash treated when they first met and that Latios helped her escape. Meanwhile, Jessie, James and Meowth each return separately to Team Rocket HQ, hoping to start independent careers and unaware that the others are there too.
The next morning, Latias receives a telepathic message and leads the group to a cave where Latios is hiding, but he distrusts the humans, and before Ash can win him over, the hunter, who has followed them, attacks. The group and the Eon Pokémon fight back, but the hunter’s device strikes Latias with a beam that turns her to stone, and he flees, taunting Latios to follow, while Ash sends Swellow after him. Latios is too injured to fly, so Ash persuades him to accept treatment, and the two set off together with Ash riding on Latios’s back. They find the hunter on a beach, held back by Swellow, but he retreats into a field of tall stone pillars that hamper Latios and petrifies Swellow and Steelix. Brock advises Ash to destroy the hunter’s device to undo the petrification.
Ash directs Latios to strike Hydreigon at close range, freeing the petrified Latias from its grip, and Pikachu smashes the blaster with Iron Tail, restoring Latias, Swellow and Steelix. Furious, the hunter attacks relentlessly until Latios finally agrees to let Ash guide him. Psychic does little damage but briefly blinds Hydreigon, and an Aura Sphere from above defeats it. The desperate hunter charges Latios on foot, but Latias holds him back as Officer Jenny arrives to arrest him. Saying goodbye, Ash notices that Latios’s wounds have not fully healed, but Latios swats his hand away and does not answer when Ash asks to battle with him again. Latias bids Ash a quick farewell, and the pair fly off, leaving Ash thinking that it may be time to go home to Pallet Town. After a long flight, Latios and Latias arrive in Alto Mare, flying past the painter Bianca and through the Secret Garden, where a girl who looks just like her plays on a swing.
