Synopsis
In Cortondo, Liko wins a cake-baking contest against Coral for the right to battle Gym Leader Katy, then Terastallizes Floragato for the first time and, despite losing, passes her first Tera Training test. Roy and Dot admire the town’s many Bug-type Pokémon while Liko frets about her first Terastal battle. Fuecoco leads them to Patisserie Soapberry, whose sweets are so good that Terapagos asks for seconds, and there they find Murdock, who has taken a part-time job to earn money for the crew while Orla repairs the Brave Olivine. An angry shout interrupts them: Coral is furious that the bakery’s famous treats have sold out, and Liko stops Roy before he admits they ate some. Murdock introduces the woman Coral is arguing with as Katy, the very Gym Leader Liko is due to face. Katy can take only one challenger that day and Coral demands to battle Liko for the slot, but since Tera Training students may not use Terastallization against each other, Katy proposes a cake-baking contest instead.
Liko has never baked a cake, but remembering Murdock’s lessons she and Floragato produce a fine matcha cake, while Coral turns out only a lump of dough. Enraged, Coral has Glalie freeze the kitchen with Blizzard and sneers at Liko, until a glare from Katy sends her storming out, her Glalie recalled because it is too big for the door. Katy declares Liko the winner and asks her to taste her own cake; Liko is surprised by how good it is, and Katy explains that she succeeded without practice because she put her heart into it, which is exactly what matters in battle. Liko realises she has been overthinking and resolves to Terastallize during the test. At the Gym’s outdoor field, with Roy, Dot and Murdock watching, Katy surprises everyone with a Normal-type Teddiursa named Teddy. Teddy’s Charm flusters Floragato into a feeble Quick Attack, its Sweet Scent breaks her concentration, and a string of Slashes leaves her reeling until Liko remembers Katy’s advice and decides simply to enjoy the battle.
Liko has Floragato fire Magical Leaf into the ground so the leaves rebound into a wall that blocks Sweet Scent and deflects Slash, then uses her Tera Orb for the first time, Terastallizing Floragato into a Grass type whose boosted Magical Leaf knocks Teddy back. Katy answers by Terastallizing Teddy into a Bug type; Floragato’s leaves now barely scratch it, and a powered-up, super-effective Fury Cutter knocks her out. Liko apologises to her partner for losing, but Katy reveals that winning is not the point of Tera Training: what counts is teamwork and the timing of the Terastallization, and Liko got both right. She stamps Liko’s Rotom Phone as proof that she has passed, admits she could have ended the battle as soon as Liko Terastallized but wanted to join in the fun, and treats everyone to sweets. That night, camping outside Cortondo, the three are too excited to sleep; Liko thanks Floragato, and Roy looks ahead to his rematch with Brassius in Artazon.
