Pokémon Card★web is a Japan-only expansion released on 20 October 2001, and it’s one of the quirkiest entries in the whole series. It was the only set of the one-off Web Era (set 12 in Japan), sitting between Pokémon VS and the e-Card era — and its defining twist wasn’t on the cards but in how you bought them: it was sold exclusively online, through Japan’s Pokémon Center website, in clear plastic packaging with a barcoded cover card.
The 48 cards themselves are mostly reprints, pulled from the early expansions — the original Expansion Pack, Jungle, the Mystery of the Fossils set and the Rocket Gang set — and leaning heavily on fan-favourites. That means a stack of the beloved “Dark” Team Rocket Pokémon (Dark Charizard, Dark Blastoise, Dark Venusaur) alongside the Fossil legendary birds Moltres, Articuno and Zapdos, all reprinted under updated rules.
Those rule updates are what make it quietly important. Web is the set that split the old “Pokémon Power” into two kinds — Poké-Power (abilities you activate) and Poké-Body (abilities that are always on) — the framework the game still uses today. It was also the first main expansion to carry Supporter cards, following the Bill promo, with Rocket’s Sneak Attack as its Supporter.
With just 48 cards and eight holos, it’s a compact, collectable oddity: a Japan-only online experiment that quietly reprinted a run of classics and, almost as a side effect, modernised the way Pokémon abilities work.
The Card Game Goes Online
Log on, order, collect. Pokémon Card★web brought the trading card game to the internet — 48 cards sold only through Japan’s Pokémon Center website, in clear packs with a barcoded cover card.
— Based on the Pokémon Card★web concept, 2001
Print Versions & Collectors Info
Web had no shop-shelf boosters or theme decks. It was sold only through the Pokémon Center Online store in Japan, shipping in distinctive clear-plastic packs sealed with a barcoded cover card. Each pack held ten cards — nine non-holo and one holo — drawn from the 48-card set. There was no English release and no secret cards, which makes complete Web sets a neat, self-contained target for collectors of vintage Japanese cardboard.

Other Cards
Web is a small but historically important set for its Trainers. It was the first main expansion to carry Supporter cards — the now-standard once-per-turn Trainer type — alongside a handful of useful utility Trainers.
Rocket’s Sneak Attack (40/48)
The set’s landmark card: Rocket’s Sneak Attack was Web’s Supporter, letting you look at your opponent’s hand and bounce a Trainer back into their deck. It helped kick off the Supporter card type that still anchors the game today.
Bill’s Teleporter (15/48)
A classic draw Trainer — flip a coin and, on heads, draw four cards. Simple, swingy, and a staple of the era’s decks.
New Pokédex (16/48)
A deck-smoothing Trainer that lets you shuffle, then look at and reorder the top few cards of your deck — quiet consistency for setup-hungry lists.
Hyper Devolution Spray (31/48)
A control-flavoured Trainer that pulls the top Evolution card off one of your own Pokémon and back into your hand.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
Web’s value lives in its eight holo rares (41–48) — a run of reprinted classics led by the Team Rocket “Dark” heavyweights and the Fossil legendary birds.
Dark Charizard (42/48)
The crown jewel. A Japanese holo Dark Charizard is one of the most desirable cards in the whole set and a genuine vintage grail for Charizard collectors.
Dark Blastoise (44/48)
The Team Rocket blue heavyweight in holo form — Dark Blastoise is a natural companion to Dark Charizard and a strong chase in its own right.
Dark Venusaur (41/48)
The grass starter completes Web’s trio of Dark holo starters alongside Dark Charizard and Dark Blastoise — and it’s the toughest of the three to track down a clean copy of, making it a real collector’s prize.
Moltres (43/48)
The fire bird of the Fossil legendary trio, reprinted here as a striking holo.
Articuno (45/48)
The ice bird of the trio — a beautiful holo Articuno and a favourite of legendary-bird collectors.
Zapdos (46/48)
The electric bird, completing the legendary trio in holo form alongside Moltres and Articuno.
Gengar (47/48)
A holo Gengar with the era’s much-loved Curse ability — a perennial fan-favourite and a strong collectable.
Machamp (48/48)
A holo Machamp whose Strikes Back body punishes attackers — a heavyweight right at the set’s numbering finish.
Surfing Pikachu (25/48)
Surfing Pikachu, the ever-popular novelty card riding a wave — a beloved non-holo that collectors chase well beyond its rarity.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Because Web is a reprint set, its strongest cards are era classics — big Stage 2 hitters that had already proven themselves in the early metagame.
Dark Charizard (42/48)
Dark Charizard’s Continuous Fireball scales with the Fire Energy you pile on, giving it explosive — if greedy — one-hit potential.
Machamp (48/48)
Machamp pairs a reliable 60-damage Seismic Toss with a body that chips the attacker every time it’s hit — a punishing wall-and-hitter.
Dark Alakazam (37/48)
Dark Alakazam’s Mind Shock ignores Weakness and Resistance, and it can reposition itself with Teleport Blast — a slippery, consistent attacker.
