Synopsis

On the road to Verdanturf Town the group are diverted by road works and fall into a pit. The “workers” are Team Rocket, who try to fish Pikachu out with a line but haul up the whole group. Ash sends out Torkoal against Seviper and Cacnea, and May’s Skitty joins in until Seviper knocks it into a cloud of Torkoal’s smoke, after which Skitty cannot make a sound. Mudkip’s Water Gun washes the villains away, and the group hurry to Foothill Town. With no Pokémon Center there, May takes Skitty to a clinic run by Dr. Abby, a specialist in alternative treatments, whose massage soon restores its energy. Abby mentions that she once had a Skitty of her own, and May suddenly recognises her as a famous former Coordinator who won both the Hoenn Grand Festival and the Ribbon Cup.

Abby explains that her Skitty, Johnny, was badly hurt in a battle long ago. The doctor who treated him, Dr. Moss, inspired her to study medicine, and when she left to open her own clinic he gave her a Moon Stone that evolved Johnny into Delcatty. In the backyard May’s Skitty meets Johnny, and Abby teaches it to juggle balls with its tail using Double Slap; Skitty manages two. Team Rocket, spying nearby, decide that both cats would make a fine gift for Giovanni, although James would rather have an Eevee. They return in disguise with a “patient”, a bandaged Meowth, and collar Skitty and Johnny while Abby is distracted. Their cover is blown when the massaged Meowth speaks aloud, and they flee in their balloon with the two cats.

Johnny destroys the balloon with Solar Beam, and the cats break free and race back to their Trainers. In the battle that follows, Johnny dodges Seviper and Cacnea with ease and shows off an impressive range of moves with Thunderbolt, Solar Beam and Blizzard. Seeing how quickly May’s Skitty picks things up, Abby teaches it Blizzard on the spot, and the two cats’ combined Blizzards, joined by Pikachu’s Thunderbolt, blast Team Rocket away. Before the group leave, Abby tells May that she can succeed as a Coordinator as long as she believes in herself and her Pokémon. Encouraged by the advice of a Grand Festival champion and armed with a powerful new move for Skitty, May thanks her, and the group continue on towards the Contest in Verdanturf Town.
