Synopsis

Admiring his five Badges, Ash learns from Brock that the next Gym is in Fortree City and wants to set off at once, but May and Max remind him that they promised to visit Professor Birch first. Birch arrives in typical style by driving his SUV off a nearby cliff, and explains that he is heading to the port to collect Professor Oak, who is visiting Hoenn. Ash and Brock ride along while May and Max wait at the lab in Littleroot Town, Max thrilled at the prospect of meeting his idol. On the mountain road, Birch swerves to avoid a wagon pulled by a Camerupt, never realising that Oak is dozing in the back of it under a cowboy hat. Oak reaches the lab first and reveals himself to Max, who immediately asks him to autograph his collection of celebrity photos.

Oak sends out his Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle to meet Birch’s Treecko, Torchic and Mudkip. Max gets on the wrong side of the Kanto trio by poking Bulbasaur’s bulb and teasing the others, earning a Tackle, an Ember and a Water Gun, but Oak still entrusts him with looking after all six for the day, and Bulbasaur offers May a friendly vine. Watching from the bushes, Team Rocket decide that the six first partners would make an ideal present for Giovanni. A Skiploom-shaped mecha swoops in and nets them all, and Oak, May and Max give chase to a cave behind a waterfall, Team Rocket’s new secret base. There the three fall into a pit trap, a vacuum sucks away their Poké Balls and a metal gate seals them in, while at the docks Birch discovers that Oak is missing.

Max covers the villains’ surveillance camera with one of his photos so the captives can climb out, and following Oak’s advice the starters break their cage with Ember, Water Gun, Tackle and Pound. Oak has a Zubat confuse Team Rocket with Supersonic and Bulbasaur retrieves the Poké Balls with Vine Whip. Trapped again, the group escape through a tunnel dug by a Dugtrio that leads to a sleeping Gyarados, whose Hydro Pump catches the bickering villains. Meanwhile, Birch’s Poochyena leads Birch, Ash and Brock to the base, and Lombre, Mudkip, Pikachu and the starters combine to break through the steel door. When Team Rocket burst out in the Skiploom mecha for one last attempt, everyone attacks together and Pikachu’s Thunder sends the trio flying in the shape of an R. The next morning the group leave Littleroot by ferry, waving goodbye to the two professors.
