Synopsis
At dawn a meteor crashes to earth, and Ken and Mary of the Pokémon Mystery Club rush to the crater in a vehicle fitted with robotic arms, using a missile launcher to break the rock open for samples. A Lunatone rises glowing from the crater, evades capture, lifts their vehicle with Psychic, absorbs their electric attacks and hypnotises the pair before fleeing towards Volley Town. Ash’s group arrive to find the town deserted and the Pokémon Center empty, until a Nurse Joy appears, refuses to heal their Pokémon or let them stay, and walks out. Brock insists that she cannot be a real Nurse Joy and checks his photo album. Then Brock’s Lombre briefly goes missing from dinner, and Ken and Mary emerge from hiding, describe their encounter with Lunatone and rush off again, the first time May and Max have met the club.
Team Rocket also find the Center closed and break in through a window, and when Joy’s footsteps approach, everyone ends up hiding in the same storage room. There James finds a frightened Lunatone hiding among the boxes. Joy discovers them all, and Team Rocket move in to capture the Pokémon. Lunatone knocks out Cacnea and Seviper with Psychic but then collapses from exhaustion. Even Meowth feels sorry for it, but Jessie and James press the attack until Pikachu’s Thunderbolt blasts them away. Joy explains that Lunatone needs moonlight to recover and chooses Camerupt Point, a nearby peak, as the best place to catch the full moon. The group set off with Lunatone hidden in a wheeled cardboard box, with Pikachu riding inside to watch over it.
On the way they bluff their way past Ken and Mary, and Max spots a rock formation shaped like a Camerupt as they reach the summit. Team Rocket return with a balloon claw, but the Pokémon Mystery Club’s machine shakes them loose and blasts them off before turning on the heroes. Pikachu’s Iron Tail and Mudkip’s Water Gun bounce off it, and although May’s Beautifly lands a strong Silver Wind, the follow-up Thunderbolt and Water Gun have no effect. Then the full moon rises. Lunatone soaks up its light, recovers completely and unleashes Hidden Power, destroying the club’s vehicle and sending Ken and Mary flying. Ash reflects on how lucky they were to help such a rare Pokémon, and everyone waves goodbye as Lunatone drifts back up into the night sky on its way home to space.
