Synopsis
At the Fuchsia City Pokémon Center, Nurse Joy admires May’s Egg, and Brock gets knocked flat by Bonsly when he stops feeding it to flirt with her. Ash heads outside to train for the Battle Pike, and when Squirtle wanders after him, May follows. Team Rocket, watching from a tree, split up to try their luck. Squirtle leads May to an abandoned railway station, where an elderly woman named Edna insists she is waiting for a steam train bringing someone important. Her granddaughter Katrina comes to take her home, and after Edna leaves, May finds an old photograph of her on the bench. Katrina explains, with Meowth eavesdropping, that Edna and her husband Jonathan once ran a Pokémon breeding centre together. When Jonathan left to study medicine, Edna read his farewell letter and ran to the station to tell him she was expecting a baby, but she lost her locket in a collision with a stranger and missed the train. A year later Jonathan died in an accident, and Edna has waited at the station every day since.
That night May’s Egg begins to glow, and Nurse Joy offers to look after it because it is close to hatching. Squirtle has disappeared again, so May returns to the station and finds Meowth sitting on the bench, unable to stop thinking about Edna’s story. Squirtle points to the tracks, where Edna’s lost locket lies. When May opens it and sees Jonathan’s picture, a light surrounds her, Squirtle and Meowth and carries them back to the day of Jonathan’s departure. A train nearly runs them down, and a station attendant throws them out when May tries to keep Jonathan from boarding. As young Edna reads the letter and races to the station, May and Meowth take to the sky in a hot-air balloon, and Squirtle fires Ice Beam into the clouds to turn the rain into snow, delaying the train.
Edna arrives in time to tell Jonathan about the baby, and the couple step outside to see a snow-covered fir tree glittering with Volbeat and Illumise performing their courtship dance, a sight the townspeople call the Lights of Joy. The light then whisks May and Meowth back to the present, where they dodge another train and find Fuchsia City busier and brighter than before. Ash and the others rush to tell May her Egg is hatching, and at the Pokémon Center the hatching is supervised by Edna and Jonathan, now a pair of doctors who specialise in baby Pokémon. Edna wears her locket, yet neither she nor Katrina remembers May. The Egg hatches into an Eevee, which Jonathan pronounces healthy before handing it to its new Trainer. Outside, Meowth brushes off Jessie and James and wanders away alone, and that night the fir tree shines once more over the happy couple.
