Synopsis

At the Battle Palace, Spenser and Scott ask whether Ash is ready, and because the sun is shining Spenser decides to hold the battle in the jungle that covers most of the island. Scott explains the rules: three Pokémon each, with only the challenger allowed to substitute. The spectators ride in a Poké Ball-shaped hot-air balloon that gives them a view of the whole island, and a flying robot referee called Jamero keeps everyone informed, since no ordinary referee could keep up. Team Rocket hide in a tree, hoping for a chance to grab Pikachu. The first round pits Spenser’s Shiftry against Sceptile. Shiftry dodges Bullet Seed and the two race through the forest; Double Team and a Shadow Ball knock Sceptile into a pond, which Shiftry fills with rocks using Rock Smash. Sceptile bursts out from behind a waterfall and wins with Pound and Leaf Blade.

Spenser’s next Pokémon is Venusaur, and Ash sends out Heracross, which he has brought over from Professor Oak’s lab for this battle; the friends watching from the balloon believe the Bug-type should have the edge over the Grass-type giant, overlooking Venusaur’s Poison typing. Heracross is more interested in sipping nectar from Venusaur’s flower at first, but its Horn Attack and Megahorn soon batter Venusaur, until a Solar Beam knocks it out. When Spenser stops for a snack, Ash switches to Swellow, which lures Venusaur toward the beach, where clouds block the sun so that Solar Beam cannot charge; Swellow dodges every attack and wins with Aerial Ace. Spenser’s final Pokémon, Claydol, then teleports around Swellow, strikes it with Rapid Spin and knocks it out with Hyper Beam.

With one Pokémon left each, it comes down to Sceptile, already tired from the first round, against the fresh Claydol, a Ground and Psychic type that can float out of reach. A stray Psybeam blows Team Rocket out of their hiding place, and then a sudden squall drenches the field, interrupting Sceptile’s charge as Claydol traps it in a sand twister and pounds it with Psybeam. When the clouds part, sunlight pours down onto the seeds on Sceptile’s back, and it unleashes a brand-new Solar Beam, which hits Claydol super-effectively and wins the match. It is a fitting victory on the same island where Sceptile so recently rediscovered its fighting spirit. Spenser awards Ash the Spirits Symbol, his fifth, and Scott warns that the next Frontier Brain will be tougher still.
