Synopsis

Ash and Dawn chase Aipom through the treetops toward a tree dripping with honey, and the sweet scent draws a wild Burmy out of the branches too. Out of the bushes jump a young woman named Cheryl and her Chansey, determined to catch it. Chansey’s Attract leaves the Burmy smitten, and when Ash and Dawn point out that a Pokémon has to be weakened first, Cheryl orders Double Slap. Burmy hits back with Tackle and shields itself with Protect, but Chansey’s Egg Bomb breaks through and Cheryl’s Poké Ball does the rest. Cheryl introduces herself as a treasure hunter following in her grandfather’s footsteps, and Croagunk drags Brock away mid-declaration of love. Over tea she unrolls a map of Eterna Forest showing the hidden Amber Castle, said to hold the Enchanted Honey, the sweetest honey in the world.

Cheryl’s plan is to evolve her new Burmy into Mothim, whose keen sense of smell should lead her straight to the castle. Dawn asks why she does not simply catch a Mothim, and Cheryl explains that only male Burmy evolve into Mothim, showing off three Wormadam that were once female Burmy, one in each cloak. Ash offers to help it gain experience. Burmy’s Tackle bounces off Turtwig, and when its cloak falls off and covers Turtwig’s eyes, the panicked Turtwig knocks it flat by accident, so Ash switches to Pikachu, which fires a gentle Thunderbolt and theatrically pretends to be hurt by Burmy’s Tackle. Before Burmy can try again, Team Rocket snatch it with an extending arm, planning to evolve it and find the honey for themselves, and Seviper’s Haze covers their escape.

In their hideout, the trio feed the starving Burmy, which devours all their supplies, then put it through a brutal training regime. Wobbuffet’s Detect blocks its Tackle, Meowth’s Fury Swipes knock it out, and Jessie’s harsh pep talk only frightens it. Staravia finds the hideout from the air and leads everyone there. While Piplup and Pikachu battle Seviper and Carnivine outside, Brock and Cheryl slip in to rescue Burmy, and Chansey’s Double Slap deals with Meowth and Wobbuffet. Burmy breaks free, knocks out Meowth and Wobbuffet with Hidden Power and evolves into Mothim. Chansey’s Egg Bomb and Mothim’s Psybeam defeat Seviper and Carnivine, and Pikachu’s Volt Tackle blasts Team Rocket away. Mothim immediately picks up a scent, and Cheryl and the friends set off after it toward the Amber Castle.
