Synopsis

Riding rented bicycles down the Cycling Road toward Hearthome City, with Pikachu, Piplup and Brock’s Egg in their baskets, Dawn reminds Ash of the day Pikachu fried her old bike, and Ash finally apologises. Storm clouds gather and the Egg starts to glow, a sign that it is about to hatch, so the friends race to a Pokémon Center ahead. It is deserted and untidy, staffed only by a Chansey with a mop, and they find Nurse Joy gloomily staring at a tree out the back. Since the Cycling Road opened, she explains, riders simply pedal past and the Center has been empty. When Brock asks her to help hatch his Egg, she doubts she is up to it, but the Egg glows again and the rain begins, and everyone hurries inside.

In the examination room, with Joy checking the heartbeat and Chansey keeping her focused, Brock calls for warm water and towels; Ash burns his hand on the kettle, and Dawn has to hunt for towels past a supply closet where Team Rocket are stuffing themselves. The Egg blazes with light and hatches into a Happiny, which tumbles over, rights itself and giggles when Brock bathes it and scratches the bump on its head. Watching from the doorway, Jessie remembers her days at Pokémon Nurse School and decides to steal Happiny, raise it into a nurse and open a Pokémon Center of their own. When the baby starts crying, Joy explains that Happiny carry a round white stone to copy Chansey, so Brock polishes a rock into a smooth, egg-shaped stone that fits its pouch, but as he holds it out, a mechanical arm snatches Happiny away.

James reveals that their Pokémon Center would really be a front for stealing and selling Pokémon, Dustox’s Poison Sting covers the getaway and Cacnea’s Sandstorm blinds the pursuers, but Happiny proves so strong that it tears the balloon apart and sends the trio crashing down. While Staravia clears the dust with Whirlwind and scouts ahead, Joy despairs until injured wild Weedle and Starly remind her that the forest still needs a nurse. Happiny rejects every rock Team Rocket offer it, blowing a raspberry at Jessie. When the rescuers arrive, Chansey’s Egg Bomb and Sudowoodo’s Double-Edge join the fight, and Happiny bowls over Wobbuffet, Meowth and Mime Jr., grabs Seviper’s tail and flings it into its Trainers before Pikachu’s Volt Tackle blasts them away. Happiny gladly accepts the Oval Stone, tosses Brock into the air in delight and enters his Poké Ball.
