Synopsis

Dawn is training in the woods with Piplup when Zoey’s Glameow and Misdreavus arrive looking for help: Zoey has sprained her ankle and cannot walk. Brock gives her first aid and the friends help her back to camp, where she introduces her new Shellos, caught in the same lake where Dawn found Buizel. The shy Shellos is frightened by Pikachu and by Buizel’s stare, and when Piplup and Buizel start squabbling, Zoey points out that the Hearthome Contest uses Double Performances, in which a Coordinator shows two Pokémon at once. She plays a video of Top Coordinator Marina performing with her Feraligatr, the evolved Wani-Wani, and her pink Jigglypuff, then demonstrates a combination of her own: Shellos fires Mud Bomb into the air, Glameow strikes it with Shock Wave and Hidden Power shatters it into a brilliant display.

Dawn’s attempts go badly. Piplup’s Whirlpool hides Pachirisu’s Sweet Kiss hearts, and Pachirisu’s Discharge into the whirlpool shocks Dawn and Piplup twice over. To help, Ash suggests a practice Contest Battle with Pikachu and Aipom against Buizel and Buneary. Dawn tries a new idea, Buneary freezing Buizel’s Aqua Jet with Ice Beam to create an Ice Aqua Jet, but Buizel freezes solid, crashes and drags Aipom into the river. Buizel knocks Aipom out of the water with Sonic Boom, but Pikachu blasts the ground with Thunderbolt so that flying rocks shield Aipom’s Focus Punch from Ice Beam and knock Buneary down, and Volt Tackle overpowers Buizel’s Aqua Jet to win for Ash. Dawn’s Pokémon encourage her, but the Ice Aqua Jet fails again.

Jessie, disguised as Jessilina, chooses this moment to challenge the struggling Dawn, but Zoey accepts in her place despite her injured foot. Jessilina’s Dustox fires Poison Sting into the air and Seviper strikes the needles with Poison Tail to send them spinning faster, but Glameow’s Iron Tail and Shellos’s Mud Bomb shatter them into a purple sparkle. Zoey’s Pokémon dodge Psybeam, and Glameow’s Shadow Claw combined with Shellos’s Blizzard drives Jessie and her Pokémon away, without a motto or a blast-off. The friends take Zoey to the nearest Pokémon Center, where everyone agrees to meet again at the Hearthome Contest. Zoey wishes Dawn luck with her Ice Aqua Jet, and Dawn leaves with renewed determination to perfect it before their next clash.
