Synopsis
A few miles from Hearthome City, Dawn watches Buizel and Piplup swimming in a lake while a girl secretly observes them. She introduces herself as Mira and offers to teleport the friends to the city with her Abra, but Teleport lands them on top of a dam instead. Team Rocket, watching the trainers vanish, decide that an Abra would let them teleport out of blast-offs. Mira calls the landing an accident, then asks for help: her grandmother’s locket, she says, is lying at the bottom of the deep lake behind the dam. She hands out underwater breathing devices, and the group dive in to find a whole town abandoned beneath the water. As they approach the old school, a Gyarados attacks, keeps them away with Whirlpool and drives them back to the surface.
Brock realises it was a set-up, and Mira confesses that the locket story was a lie. Years ago she and two school friends found a Poké Ball containing a Sandshrew and secretly cared for it after school, feeding it, cleaning it and playing with it, but when the dam was built and the town was flooded, the three were separated and nobody remembered to take it with them. It is still in their hiding place inside the school, and Gyarados chases Mira off whenever she tries to reach it. She hid the danger because she feared the friends would refuse. They agree to help anyway, and Brock comes up with a plan, while Team Rocket follow them back into the water in their Sharpedo submarine.
Buizel dodges Hyper Beam and strikes with Aqua Jet, and when Gyarados blocks Bubble Beam with its spinning tail, Sonic Boom knocks it to the lakebed. Enraged, it chases Buizel and Piplup up out of the water and into the air, straight into Pikachu’s Thunderbolt. Inside the school, Team Rocket fire a Carvanha-shaped missile and net Mira and Abra, but Mira, pretending to be thrilled to meet them, teleports away. The friends find Sandshrew’s Poké Ball in a toy box, and on the surface Mira is joyfully reunited with it. Team Rocket’s Psychic-proof net catches Abra, but Turtwig’s Razor Leaf slices it open; Sandshrew asks to battle, beating Dustox with Slash and Sandstorm alongside Turtwig before Pikachu’s Thunderbolt finishes the trio. Keeping her original promise, Mira teleports the friends to Hearthome City, saving them days of walking.
