Synopsis

Hoping to find a place to stay, Ash and his friends approach a large manor and are suddenly blinded by spotlights. A blue-haired girl, Marble, appears on the roof with her Luxray, which leaps down and attacks Pikachu against its Trainer’s wishes. Even when Pikachu hides in the bushes, Luxray’s piercing eyes find it, and the two clash with Iron Tail; Marble calls for backup, but Pikachu’s Thunderbolt knocks out the six bodyguards who surround the group. The manor’s owner, Matthew, recognises the friends from the Hearthome City Tag Battle Competition and explains that the Bandit Beauties Three have announced they will steal his Old Charm. He asked Officer Jenny for help, and she sent Marble. Marble confides that Luxray has disobeyed her ever since it evolved and found it could no longer use Electric-type moves; when its Charge Beam failed during an arrest, Jenny’s Arcanine had to step in. She hopes Pikachu might inspire it.

Team Rocket sneak in disguised as bodyguards, Meowth riding on top of Wobbuffet, and at ten to eight they announce that Matthew has ordered them to move the Old Charm. Brock even thinks moving it might fool the thieves, until Matthew appears and says he gave no such order. Unmasked, the trio set off a bomb and flee in their balloon; a mecha arm swats Luxray’s Iron Tail aside, and Staravia’s Quick Attack makes them fire thrusters that puncture the balloon on the manor and crash them into a pit trap. Matthew explains that the grounds are riddled with traps protecting his treasure. Luxray tries to warn Pikachu about one, but Pikachu mistakes the warning for hostility and falls in, and Luxray jumps in after it while the others take a hidden staircase behind a fireplace. Underground, Luxray triggers a pit and nearly falls onto spikes until Pikachu grabs its tail in its mouth and hauls it up, ending their rivalry.

Ash remembers how Pikachu once ignored him until he protected it from a flock of Spearow, and suggests Marble build a friendship with Luxray outside of work. Luxray shields Pikachu from flying spikes with Iron Tail, Marble and Luxray make up, and when Marble trips a trap that makes the walls close in, Luxray hits the switch to stop it. Team Rocket tunnel into the vault, lock the Charm in a safe and attack with Seviper and Carnivine. Luxray blocks Poison Tail and Bite with Iron Tail, then absorbs one of Pikachu’s Thunderbolts to charge its body, and Marble’s Charge Beam finally works, stopping a double Bite. Dawn catches the box, and a joint attack from Pikachu and Luxray blasts the trio out of the ground. Luxray’s Thunder Fang electrifies the safe until it springs open, returning the Old Charm. Officer Jenny arrives to scold Marble for taking the case without authorisation but praises her bond with Luxray, Croagunk silences Brock, and Matthew treats everyone to a meal.
