Synopsis
As the group prepare to leave Veilstone City, Reggie takes them to see the city’s famous meteorites. While they admire the huge rocks, red, green and blue lights flash high in the sky, and everyone wonders where the meteorites came from. Back at the Pokémon Center, Nurse Joy recommends the Gym in Pastoria City as Ash’s next stop, and Reggie, on a videophone call, tells Paul that Ash is a tough opponent, which irritates his brother. Meanwhile Commander Saturn arrives by helicopter at the Team Galactic headquarters in Veilstone with a mysterious box, briefs his Grunts and heads for the meteorite park. Team Rocket also plan to steal the meteorites, singing about it until James points out that lifting even one would give them all hernias. Then Saturn opens the box to reveal the Spear Key, the cube taken from the Solaceon Ruins, which hovers, changes shape and makes the meteorites glow and fire beams of light into the sky.
A Grunt scrambles the city’s communications, knocking out phones, networks and even medical equipment, while Team Galactic’s own equipment keeps working. Officer Jenny sends units across the city, and on the way to the hill Ash’s group meet Maylene and Lucario. At the park, Team Rocket try their motto on Team Galactic, but Saturn’s Toxicroak blasts them away with Sludge Bomb. Ash and his friends first suspect Team Rocket, much to Jessie’s annoyance, and then come face to face with Saturn for the first time, Ash recalling the Adamant Orb theft in Eterna City and Dawn the events at the Solaceon Ruins. Toxicroak fires Dark Pulse, and Lucario’s Aura Sphere has no effect on it. When Jenny arrives, Saturn has the Grunts release a swarm of Golbat to cover the helicopters lifting the meteorites, and the group struggle until Reggie arrives with Paul’s Electabuzz.
Brock’s Croagunk takes on Saturn’s Toxicroak, beginning a rivalry, and Team Rocket blast off again, caught in the crossfire. Pikachu and Electabuzz combine their electric attacks to take out many of the Golbat, and when a Golbat fires a Shadow Ball at Pikachu, Electabuzz blocks it, settling the old grudge between them. The heroes then target the helicopters’ cables: Pikachu’s Volt Tackle, boosted by Electabuzz’s Thunder, and Lucario’s Bone Rush sever them, and Piplup’s Whirlpool cushions the falling meteorites. On a signal from his Grunts, Saturn sighs and retreats, and Pikachu’s Thunderbolt and Lucario’s Aura Sphere fall short of the departing helicopters. Ash apologises for letting the villains escape, but Jenny says the day is a success because everyone and the meteorites are safe. In his helicopter, Saturn reveals that the next stage of the plan will take place at a lake, and the next morning Ash and his friends say goodbye to Maylene and Reggie and set off for Pastoria by way of Lake Valor.
