Synopsis
Ash and Dawn hold a training match in Triple Battle style, three Pokémon to a side, while Brock looks on. Afterwards the over-excited Gligar hugs Ash and knocks him flat, so Brock offers Sudowoodo for a sparring match to calm it down. Before they can start, a strong gust blows Gligar into Team Rocket’s balloon and carries both away. Nearby, Paul and his Electabuzz are trying to catch a wild Drapion with an electric attack when Gligar falls right in front of them and the Drapion escapes. Paul is scolding Gligar when Staravia leads Ash and his friends to the spot. Ash asks whether Paul has challenged the Pastoria Gym yet, and Paul mocks Ash’s showing in the Wallace Cup. Ash retorts that Wallace recommended it and that Buizel grew stronger for it, and Paul reminds him that Ash once criticised his own entry in the Hearthome Tag Battle Competition.
The argument escalates into their old clash of philosophies: Paul trains his Pokémon harshly, while Ash raises his with love and trust, though both want to beat Cynthia in the Sinnoh League. Paul starts to leave, but when Chimchar runs after him and shouts at him, he is amused enough to agree to a three-on-three battle. Ash wins Dawn’s Pokétch coin toss, and Gligar eagerly volunteers for its first real battle, against Paul’s Gliscor. Gligar’s X-Scissor is answered with Knock Off, its Sand Attack has no effect, and when Ash tries to counter Guillotine with Steel Wing, Gliscor strikes first and knocks Gligar out in one blow. Paul sneers that Gligar should learn that losing is its Trainer’s fault, an idea Ash’s Pokémon reject. Paul’s next Pokémon is Ursaring, and Chimchar insists on facing it, even though Pikachu doubts that it is ready. Its Flamethrower barely scratches Ursaring, but it stands firm against Focus Blast.
Ursaring’s Hammer Arm digs Chimchar out from underground and launches it into the air, it catches Flame Wheel and blasts Chimchar at close range with Secret Power, and on the rocky field the move makes Chimchar flinch. Another Hammer Arm buries it under rubble, and then Chimchar bursts out with Blaze activated in a terrifying new form, the power Paul once glimpsed in its fight with the Zangoose. Chimchar smashes through Focus Blast with Flame Wheel and knocks Ursaring out, but its fury keeps building: it charges at Ash and Paul, sets the forest alight and even blasts Team Rocket away. Piplup’s Whirlpool and Buizel’s Water Gun douse the flames, and when Chimchar tries to flee, Ash and his team block its path. Ash grabs it and begs it to stop, enduring the heat and even a bite to the shoulder while Brock holds the others back, until Chimchar calms down. Ash praises its power and promises they will learn to control it together; Paul calls him a fool but agrees to a rematch once Chimchar has mastered Blaze.
