Synopsis
Back in Hearthome City for Ash’s Gym battle, the group learn that Gym Leader Fantina is still away. A limousine pulls up carrying the famous Pokémon Stylist Paris and her Lopunny; she recognises Ash from the Hearthome Tag Battle Competition, while Brock insists he was there too and is promptly forgotten. Taking a liking to Dawn’s Buneary and Ash’s Pikachu, Paris invites them to enter the Hearthome Collection, a fashion show for Pokémon Stylists, and Jessie, overhearing, plans to enter too with James as her designer. At the Pokémon Center the friends meet Cocoa, a celebrity devoted to boutique fashion, who scolds Buneary when it approaches her dress, hurting Dawn’s feelings, and the designer Hermione dismisses Stylists and Coordinators as much the same before walking off. That night, while Brock finishes Ash’s outfit, Dawn struggles with her design until she remembers Zoey’s advice after Solaceon: the audience is watching the Pokémon, not the Trainer.
The next day Mayor Enta opens the show and introduces the judges, Paris and her former teacher Hermione, the editor-in-chief of Poké Chic, who is unhappy with the flashy entries and blames Paris for making Pokémon fashion gaudy. Ash and Pikachu appear as entry 18 in matching coloured wigs and striped loincloths modelled on the gods of wind and thunder, Pikachu drumming on the stage with Iron Tail and finishing with Thunderbolt, and the judges praise their originality. “Jessilina” presents Wobbuffet, but her heavy make-up and extra decorations clash with James’s design and leave the judges cold, though Brock’s praise for James’s accessories cheers him up. Cocoa’s Mismagius floats on stage as its dress unravels and creates a colourful effect with Psywave. Dawn comes last, at number 21: she and Buneary wear simple matching white dresses and necklaces, and Buneary’s Ice Beam performance earns high praise.
Ash, Dawn and Cocoa are the finalists for three awards: overall winner, best costume and most original entry. Sore losers, Team Rocket attack in a giant mecha to steal the Pokémon, but Paris’s Lopunny jams it with Hidden Power, and Lopunny and Buneary destroy it with a combined Bounce, sending the trio flying. When the ceremony resumes, Ash and Pikachu win the prize for originality and Dawn is named overall winner. Cocoa protests, but Hermione tells her she will receive only the award for accessories, since her accessories outshone her Pokémon. The judges praise Dawn for letting Buneary’s personality shine, and Paris credits Brock’s skill with the dresses. Hermione asks Dawn to start a Poké Chic collection straight away, but Dawn declines, explaining that she is a Coordinator at heart with much still to learn, and Hermione wishes her well. It was the last episode to air in Japan before Giratina and the Sky Warrior opened in cinemas.
