Synopsis
A police plane carrying the Adamant Orb from Eterna City to Celestic Town is attacked by a flock of Golbat and Saturn’s Toxicroak, and Saturn remarks that everything is going to plan. At the Celestic Town Pokémon Center, Brock and Dawn prepare to leave while Ash practises a technique to counter Fantina’s Hypnosis, inspired by Dawn’s Contest battle with Lila. Then the news breaks that Team Galactic have stolen the Adamant Orb, which was on its way to the Celestic Town Historical Research Center, home of its counterpart, the Lustrous Orb. Learning that Cynthia is in town, the friends decide to meet her there. When Nurse Joy appears, Brock flirts as usual, but for once Croagunk does not jab him; it stares out of the window instead, which alarms Brock. Outside, Team Rocket plan to steal the Lustrous Orb before Team Galactic can get their hands on it.
At the Research Center the group meet Cynthia and her grandmother, Professor Carolina, the head of the centre. On a nearby rooftop Saturn recognises Ash’s group from Veilstone and warns Commander Mars, and Team Galactic members disguised as police officers slip inside. A famous businessman named Cyrus also arrives. Professor Carolina explains Celestic Town’s connection to Dialga and Palkia, and when Ash and Dawn identify Mesprit and Azelf in a carving and describe their encounters, Cynthia adds that Uxie is the third lake guardian, the being of knowledge. Cyrus asks to see the Lustrous Orb, while Mars’s team plant explosives in the nearby ruins and Team Rocket, in disguise, take over the guards’ posts. Carolina opens the vault with a key card and palm scanner; Ash and Dawn feel nothing from the orb, and Cyrus angrily insists that it is bound to the dawn of time.
Mars detonates the explosives, panic spreads, and the vault door will not reseal because the security system has been compromised. Cynthia suggests moving the orb, Ash volunteers to guard it, and Officer Jenny enlists the disguised Team Rocket to help. As Saturn and Toxicroak lead helicopters to the roof, Croagunk leaves its Poké Ball and runs off down a corridor with Brock in pursuit. The others carry the orb towards the entrance, where Saturn is waiting; his Bronzor has put the crowd outside to sleep and his Toxicroak has dealt with everyone inside. Bronzor’s Hypnosis is no match for Cynthia’s Garchomp, but as the group retreat, Mars blocks their path. Croagunk crashes through the skylight to confront Toxicroak, its Anticipation having sensed its rival all along, but Toxicroak knocks it out with a single Poison Jab as Brock watches helplessly. Cynthia warns Team Galactic that they will never escape with the orb and sends out another Pokémon.
