Synopsis

Ash battles Byron for the Mine Badge, and Gliscor’s first Gym battle ends in victory with a close-range Fire Fang against Bastiodon. With Roark refereeing, Chimchar opens against Bronzor, whose Heatproof Ability and Rain Dance blunt its fire until a Flame Wheel collides with Gyro Ball and Bronzor faints.

Byron’s Steelix uses Screech, Bind and Iron Tail to knock out Buizel, but the tired Chimchar returns, digs until the huge Steelix collapses the ground beneath itself, and wins with Flame Wheel. Bastiodon’s Iron Defense and Metal Burst then stop Chimchar. Meanwhile, Team Rocket’s attempts to raid the Gym’s fossils are repelled by Kabuto, Omastar, Kabutops, Armaldo and Cradily.

Ash’s last choice is Gliscor, which struggles against Bastiodon’s Iron Head and Flash Cannon. Gliscor trips its opponent with its tail, covers the field with Sand Attack and lands Fire Fang at point-blank range, and Bastiodon finally falls. Byron awards Ash the Mine Badge, his sixth in Sinnoh.
